If there are frequent injuries like last year, he will be back in no time. However even if there isn't, he is better choice for 3D pairing than Sutton right now. That aside most D don't get it together til 25 so sending him to the A until they can trade Sutton makes sense. Unless you want to just release Sutton outright.

I agree with you on Sutton, but just the fact that they deemed it nessessary to bring him must shoots holes in the confidence the Oilers must have in Petry. He's about as useful as a trap door on a canoe as far as i'm concerned. Thank goodness for this Harry Potter kid.

Pretty random post.. Sutton was traded for Foster. And Petry played less then half a season as a rookie for the Oilers last season. If Petry is a trap door at age 24 then Potter was a toilet paper at age 24,25 and 26. This Potter KID is showing NHL readiness at age 27.

Sutton will be traded at the trading dead line, just hope his level of play improves. If he plays at his potential he might be worth a 2nd or 3rd pick.

Good call, we need to make sure that we have a guy that can come up in case of injury and if we sent Potter down and he got claimed our call-up depth chart would fall from Petry then Teubert to Teubert then Plante

It's not Petry's development that I'm concerned about. Playing in the AHL is fine at this stage in his career, especially considering he'll be the first callup if/when we need one. It's the fact that he's the 3rd or 4th best defenseman we have and we're willingly going without him when we already have one of the league's worst defenses to begin with.

More seasoning the better when it comes to D.

Look what detroit is doing with the comparable Brendan Smith. (Yes, I know very different teams/situations).

He needs to play with confidence for consistantly, if he doesnt do that he will never be a top 4 d-man for us, the guy is almost 24 so even though he is only a second year pro there has to be a sense of urgency in his play.

Peckham may be next if his craptacular play continues. Been terrible so far.

If Potter or anyone else goes on waivers they get claimed.

Only reason he got sent down IMO
Pretty sure Teddy would have to clear...

We need some losses so that is why the move was made Sutton and Peckham are worst than him for sure.

Not too happy about this. Though I can see why the decision was made. I hope he is paired with Teubert. I would like to see them develop some much-needed chemistry. Hopefully they can both earn spots for the 2012-2013 season.

Lets be realistic Petry has looked ok this year. He was worse than ok in his last game he played.

agreed. i know he's the only guy thats not waiver eligible but it really grinds my gears that becuase of a move like this the team cannot ice the best lineup possible. I thought Renney said that the goal this year was going for the w?

IIRC he looked o.k. in his last game here, but was coughing the puck up quite a bit in the game before his last.

Petry is still a potential player. Great at times, but makes mistakes like a rookie. If he cries about time in the A, he may need an attitude adjustment too. Besides, it'd be good for him to be leaned on as a #1D for a bit against weaker opponents. Build up that mental fortitude a bit.

I hope nobody complaining about this demotion are the same people talking about how they felt the Barker signing was a "good gamble" a few months ago.

Petry's game was a little bit of everything, good, bad and ugly all mixed together.

I'd say Barker also fits that description.

Still waiting for the "good" from Barker, myself.

Maybe I missed it?

Petry getting sent down doesn't mean that we should cut ties with him.
