Faceoffs

Just looked at the league leaders and it's looking pret-ty good right now.

By all means take a look for yourself:
http://espn.go.com/nhl/statistics/pl.../stat/faceoffs

Vitale and Letestu each carrying about 55% this season. Vitale in particular seems like he could be a gem of a faceoff man don't you guys think?
Park is 56%
Even Staal is 51%.

Crosby had about 55% last season as well.
Lots of options.

A huge part of the game and I'm glad we have guys like Letestu/Vitale.

I am a bit shocked at Staal. I feel every big defensive zone faceoff has been lost by #11. I'm really surprised to see the number in his favor.

That is the funny things about sports. Sometimes your gut/instinct/feelings are completely different than what the stats say. A good example is in John Kruk's autobiography. He said that somebody told him he had good numbers against a certain reliever and sucked against another. Kruk could not believe it because he honestly felt completely the opposite. That is what makes being a coach totally amazing to me. You can have all the stats and figures you want, but sometimes the right move is the instinctive move.

I remember Staal being 68% taking quite a few draws in a recent game. He's not nearly consistent enough to be relied upon to take key defensive zone f/o's. Having Crosby back will allow us to have multiple f/o aces with Vitale, Letestu and Park.

In 2009-2010 he was 48.3.
Last year he regressed to 46.9. I can't help but wonder if that figure is related to match-ups. With Sid and Geno injured Staal was probably forced to take a lot of faceoffs that he wouldn't previously been asked to take.

But regardless of that - the current season mark could revert close to career norms quickly if he lost just 6 faceoffs in a row. It's too early to say that Staal has achieved faceoff parity.
