Extremely misleading use of statistics to back up your argument. Two problems that are feeding into each other here: small sample variance and ordinal ranking. The Caps have allowed only 11 goals in 5 games, and 3 of those were brutal errors by Vokoun that you cannot fairly pin on the defense.

Anyway:

Capitals last year -- 2.33 GA/G
Capitals this year -- 2.20 GA/G

A 2.20 would have tied Vancouver for first in the league last year. At the moment, you still have 12 teams whose current season GA/G's are better than Vancouver's league-leading total last year, and you still have 10 teams with GA/G's of 3.00 or higher. As the variance sorts out and teams regress towards the mean, you will begin to have meaningful ordinal rankings. At this early stage, by saying "the Capitals are 14th," you are measuring random variance in the league rankings far more than the Caps actual performance itself.

Simmonds-Briere-Read tonight, according to Read.

I guess that means something like:

JVR-Giroux-Jagr
Simmonds-Briere-Read
Hartnell-Schenn-Voracek
Nodl-Couturier-Talbot

Matt Read was on DNL, and he said that he was going to play with Briere and Simmonds tonight

I used that stat in conjunction with what I've actually observed with my own eyes: sloppy defensive play compared to other NHL teams that I've seen thus far. Vokoun allowed 3 sloppy goals, but he's bailed out their defense more than that.

Edit: If the Caps played this sort of defense in front of Neuvirth, they would have fared worse last year. They'd be faring worse this year as well.

The Caps were solid defensive team last year, but on the other hand all their big players had a down year.

Who knows. The point is that "14th in goals against" doesn't back up your case when 14th is 2.20 GA/G.

Yeah, and I don't think their play last year is the norm...just something they were forced to do.

Someone is nitpicking.

It's pretty accurate considering how they've played. Middle of the pack is about right, regardless of the actual number. The point is, their ability to keep the puck out of their own net has dropped compared to last year. What's important is that relative to other teams they currently aren't all that great at it.

Nice work again M.S.E. 2nd real test for both these MoFo's (Boston was 1st). I really want to see us prove the dudes who get their period when Bryz's contract numbers vs. Vokouns come up ....wrong. Bryz will not be denied. Thank you , bye bye.
