Two goals for Lupul tonight, Jake Gardiner played 25 minutes in a 4-3 overtime win for the Leafs.

Yeah. I hope this Fowler kid can live up to the godly standards that Gardiner has been playing at.

sigh.. stop with the gardiner please.. everytime i read it i just get more depressed...
dont see how people thought he wouldn't pan out.. i don't think that our gm said lets get rid of gardiner instead of schultz.. i think burke (since he drafted gardiner) said i want gardiner not schultz. if you want beauch this is what its gotta be.

Burke drafted Schultz too. And most Wisconsin fans think Schultz will have the more successful NHL career.

I still don't endorse trading a top prospect and top 6 forward for someone you could have signed a year and a half earlier though. Not good asset management at all.

But he admitted his mistake and made the team better. id rather have a GM that can fix his mistakes then 1 that says he didnt make 1. because everyone makes mistakes eventually.

I'd just rather have a GM that doesn't make mistakes / trade away top prospects.

Every GM makes mistakes.

I was one of the first to come out and say Murray made a mistake moving Gardiner and Lupul for Beauchemin. In my opinion he paid too much, and you should never be cavalier about giving up one of your top prospects. But it's done, and Burke isn't going to graciously give Gardiner back.

That doesn't mean I won't keep an eye on Gardiner though.

I'm with you here. One of my biggest complaints about Murray is his asset management. Seems silly to give up a top 6 guy and a top three prospect for arguably a guy who slates in as your 4th best defenseman.

But I get why it was done. We needed a dman, management, coaches, players are all familiar with Beauchemin. It makes sense. I think you'd just hope the GM would either have the foresight to not let him sign elsewhere in the first place or trade away Lupul only for that 3/4 dman we need.

Seems to me once Beauchemin became available Murray put on the blinders and did whatever it took to acquire him rather than shop around for other dmen with similar attributes who wouldn't cost as much. Again this is all speculation on my part, he may have shopped around.

i really like what beauch has done to our d so at least that is a plus lol..

i liked lupul when he was here as well. i didn't want to give him up and hes doing pretty good so far in TO this season..

leafs blown out today 6-2 and yet.. gardiner 0+1=1 and a +2 for the day.. MANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN lol

P.S. i didn't know burke drafted schultz.. schultz you better perform better than gardiner!!
any news on how schultz is doing?

edit: just saw gardiner's first point of his NHL career.. skates it himself into the o-zone and then a pretty pass to grabovski in the slot.. i am weeping right now lol

It's funny how as soon as the Leafs play a quality opponent (even though Boston has struggled so far) they come back down to Earth a little bit.

Schultz has 5 assists in 4 games so far this year. I'm really pulling for him because if he turns out as planned then it helps justify trading Gardiner.

Let's keep in mind Lupul wasn't cracking the top 6, had a high salary, had a bad injury, and wasn't producing. At the time he was seen as a salary dump by pretty much everyone. Evaluating it as trading a top line PPG wing and top prospect for a #4 D is a bit revisionist when the Toronto media was describing it as a salary dump and a prospect who would hopefully turn into the player Beauchemin was at the time. Kessel wasn't traded for Seguin and company either.

Besides, Beauchemin is currently playing like a #2. Gardiner wouldn't be with Fowler.

Yeah agree with all of this.

Schultz isn't exactly a scrub either, outperformed Gardiner last season as well from what I've read.

I'm happy with the return. Beauchemin is a warrior and has been our second best defenseman so far this year behind only Fowler. I just don't like that we traded assets to get someone we should have re-signed. Moving Lupul may also come back to bite us next year when we have no second line and could use a guy like him in the lineup.

this. i just really liked gardiner so it stings when they traded him. i also liked lupul while he was here. he would've played on the 3rd but right now when blake is injured he would've hopped into the top-6. but ya beach has helped us out a lot right now so it does help relieve some of the hurt..

hopefully schultz pans out. what is schultz projected as? offensive d-man/2-way?? and potential i'm assuming is top-4. does he have top-2 potential?

Style wise he's been compared to Brian Rafalski with more size. His top potential is probably a no 2 offensive defenseman. He may not develop enough to be good enough defensively to play top pairing minutes but should at the very least find a home as a PP specialist with a career similar to the likes of a Marc Andre Bergeron.

So to sum up his upside is a no 2 defenseman who plays top PP minutes and his downside is a journeyman PP specialist. If he turned pro this year he would likely have been Syracuse's no1 defenseman and would probably be the first call up if Visnovsky or Fowler got injured.

I can't wait until we reacquire Lupul in a trade in 3 years.

Not possible. There's no way we'll get him without having Pronger to trade.

The Leafs didn't have Pronger

Hopefully he stays healthy. Good to see him actually play some games for a stretch of time.

Kunitz has looked for the Pens.

I was having some hopes that we would sign Kunitz after the season for our 2nd line. Oh well, good for him though.
