3 wins against ACAC Alberta college teams
2 wins against Regina (who are consistently in the bottom 3 of the CW)
1 loss against Saskatchewan (a week after Saskatchewan lost to Brock)

If UNB also beat Calgary giving up only 1 goal in 2 games combined, what pushed Alberta over the top? The loss to Saskatchewan, or the wins against the lowest level teams Alberta had to offer? Typically your rankings require wins against quality opponents, we see McGill lose 8-9 spots in your rankings every year because of this.
All valid points.

IMO Regina and Calgary are likely to slump in future weeks. If they do, then wins against them will diminish in value. But that remains conjecture.

I felt compelled to leave Calgary at A level because of their sheer volume of games (eight games against Acadia, SFX, UNB, Alberta, and Manitoba) against A level opponents where they did reasonably well in all but one game.

I felt compelled to leave Regina at B level because they were 1-1-2 against Manitoba and Sask in pre-season, and beat Brock. (And Brock has had a solid pre-season for a B level team with wins over Sask and SMU.) IMO they were flattered by their record in that they gave up tons of shots in the only games for which I could get stats.

So Alberta has four wins over those two teams and an OTL against Sask, another A level team. At this stage, that is marginally ahead of UNB's wins over Dal and UQTR.

Agreed. Rankings are tough but Hollywood's tend to be closer to the real picture in my mind than the CIS top ten.

OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 ~ #2

This weekend was the first full weekend of CIS hockey this season. It produced some remarkable results, not least of which was Manitoba's second consecutive away sweep of a top contender.

My chart has been updated so as to correct some incorrectly reported pre-season results. The main changes to the chart are that UPEI got a boost from B to A, that UOIT was moved down from B to C (even though they beat Michigan in pre-season), and that + and - sub-categories have been added.

In coming weeks it will be possible to delete the intra-conference pre-season games from the table. For now the sample size for regular season only remains quite small, especially for the AUS.

I am not in a rush to alter the graded categories all that much. The best potential for a shift is between the B- and C+ teams.

Some games of significance this week are:

UPEI v Saint Mary's - Can the AUS keep 5 teams at A level? Not likely. Right now one of these two is bound to fall. UPEI's pre-season was better than SMU's.

Carleton v Ottawa - Carleton was highly touted this off-season but right now they are only mili-points ahead of Ottawa.

Regina v Manitoba - If Manitoba wants to be in the conversation for a #1 ranking they need a sweep of the pesky kittens.

Calgary v Alberta - Both teams face questions following a home sweep by Manitoba. Calgary's solid 1-2-1 road trip through the AUS had many calling them a contender.

hi Hollywood

i love the analysis, thanks for taking the time to give us the real CIS rankings.

i would like to add to your thoughts on the Bisons exhibition record. i think it would be safe to say that the Bisons faced A-level competition in Europe (in fact the Graz team was an A+ team) and came out of that with a 3-2 record and a tournament championship.

I am not sure of the calibre of the Italian teams. Graz was a very good team, though. They have done OK against some teams that played NHL teams this year.

Anyhow, for ranking purposes I don't give a lot of weight to games against non-CIS teams simply because there is no basis of comparison as between other CIS teams. If every CIS team played European or NCAA teams then that would change. The weight I give to pre-season games against CIS teams will also diminish. However, the inter-conference games are used as a gauge as to where the conferences fit against one another. One such result is UPEI's two wins over McGill.

The Italian team was admittedly a bit weaker but certainly a B+ team in the CIS world even though they are a Italian Elite (A) league team, the three German B teams would all be considered A CIS teams and the Graz team would have been the equivalent of a strong AHL team.

You might have to re-do the Top 34 here shortly.

so when are they announcing this robert!!
the way i read it....alberta carries the biscuit up the ice with way to many average bears on the ice and score.
referees blank out and miss the entire shift. but as they are digging the game winner out of the net the Bisons go bizerk and the referees have a group hug and change their minds. you cant change a call like that! not in organized hockey as far as I know?? they blew the call. in alberta this happens all the time! but they do??? so Alberta has every right to say we protest. referees can't review a too many men call..... anyways robert i hear they (canadawest leadership) agreed with the average bears and gave the bears back a point and the W.
but hold on now the Bison are now appealing...stay tuned

So that's what is happening. I would imagine the Bison argument would go like this:

- The officials made an error in not blowing play dead right away.

- The officials made an error when not penalizing Alberta for a penalty right away.

- If everything was done right, you end up right where the game ended up - with Alberta getting a penalty and Manitoba a game-winning goal.

In any event, the rankings do not change since they are based on results, not board-room decisions and deemed forfeitures.

Some OUA teams played some non-conference games this weekend, all on the road:

Friday
Cornell 3 Guelph 2
Harvard 7 Western Ontario 4
Utica 7 RMC 1

Saturday
Dartmouth 4 Western Ontario 2
Waterloo 2 Yale 1
Cornell 5 Carleton 1
Princeton 9 Guelph 4

Sunday
Waterloo at Brown

Carleton, RMC, and Guelph are off to poor starts. Western Ontario has looked something less than a national contender. Waterloo has been a solid B-level team with some ambitions of moving up to A-level.

These games will have not have much impact on the upcoming OHT34.

if your RMC, a 2-3 start isn't as all bad. Better than their 0 for 15 start. Plus i wouldnt hold TOO much stock in our loss to Utica. Utica's first game of the season, had 5 lines and 4 pairs of defense because they havent made their cuts yet and it was a non-conference game. while we were missing some key members (Pinder, Cook, MacDonald) and our extra reservist goaltender who hasnt played in a month started.

I'm thinking Clarke Singer is probably feeling good about his team's trip through the Ivy League this weekend. While Western was badly outplayed in their games against Notre Dame and Michigan State a couple fo weeks ago, they seem to be playing better now. They were very much in both of the games they played this weekend. On Friday they almost erased a 5-0 deficit against Harvard by scoring 4 straight in the second period and went into the third down by 1. On Saturday against Dartmouth, they went into the third tied - against a rested team that did not play the night before or spend 11 hours on a bus over the previous 2 days. Sure they would have like to win, but they schedule these games so they can get stronger against high(er) quality competition - we'll see in the next few weeks if it paid off.

There were two Sunday games this week you may have missed. Brown beat Waterloo 2-0 in a non-conference game. And Concordia beat McGill 3-2 in overtime. So here's the rankings:

NOTES:

UNB won twice. The other leaders all split. Or, in Alberta's case, lost twice. So Calgary leap-frogs Alberta. UPEI lost twice, but to A level teams. SMU beat UPEI so leap-frogged them. Oddly for the OUA, McGill and UWO sink because McGill lost in OT to B and C level teams and UWO was idle. (They were losing non-conference games in the States.) So they were by-passed by Calgary and SMU, winners over A level teams. What's up with McGill? While it is true they have several OTL's I point out that they have only one win by more than 1 goal. And those OTL's were NOT in shoot-outs. They could easily be 1-7 (including pre-season).

UBC was idle and Waterloo and Queen's only had one CIS game, so they were not able to budge. Nipissing lost their + sign in a 0-1-1 weekend which included a loss to a C level team.

Within the B level all the teams from 15-21 are basically in a dead heat. Moncton and Nipissing are still getting a slight bump from pre-season results which will continue to diminish in value. Those losses to C level teams are hurting Brock.

The B- teams continue to puzzle. Regina stayed put with a funny split against Manitoba. Carelton beats a C level team in OT. Windsor loses twice to B level teams. Dalhousie continues to beat only C level teams.

There was some shuffling in the C level. Concordia could be in for a promotion. Nobody is looking like starting a D level.

This is an overall observation: Has the bottom of the OUA gotten better while the top has gotten worse? Lakehead, Laurier, and UQTR were once top 10 regulars. And last year UWO and McGill were strong.

nicely done once again Hollywood. Mcgill is not off to a good start and could have easily lost both games against Lakehead to start the year. If they did, Lakehead would have shot up the rankings. Two one goal games that were both even is the reason they are low like they are. I think lakehead is a much better team than people are giving them credit. They have some good recruits this year. Some guys have stepped up. And their top end guys are playing solid (Caria leading CIS in points) Lakehead has the potential to surprise some people this year.

So Far this Season looks like we are in store for a Great One, the CIS as a whole looks like its the Tighest its ever been in a few years. the AUS looks tight, while St Thomas hasn't won yet, they havent been all too bad at all close games. UNB hasn't dominated in their 4 wins, but yet they played good teams especialy X, without their Top line for all 4 games (Macneil, Culligan and Todd) and key recruits (Drummond and Denny)

The Canada West Looks tight, Alberta has shown they are very beatable and are suddenly in a Slump, Manitoba has look great in every game except of course the lost to Regina, but that shows how tight the West could be this year.

The OUA East has tightened up dominated by McGill over the past couple of years not the case so far this year, they have a number of teams with winning records in the division so far

Agreed. This team is not as strong as some of our past teams, but it's definitely better than last year's. I really don't think that any OUA East team, outside of McGill & UQTR, can be considered a better team. I think we're better than UQTR as well, but that's at least a bit of a tossup.

I think that we will be favoured in every OUA game that we have left before Christmas, so hopefully they can get on a roll and win 9 of 10 or something. It's a great sign that we're 4-0 on the road because the team has been a horrible road team, no matter the opponent, the past two years under Scherban.

McDonald missed all 4 of those road games, and he's clearly our 2nd best offensive weapon after Caria. Beljo missed them all as well. He seemed to be a top 6 forward coming into the season, so it's nice to be battling through those injuries.

OHT34 #4: October 31, 2011

OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 – OCTOBER 31, 2011

Happy Halloween! This week's OHT34 is not really scary at all.

This is the last week in which intra-conference pre-season games will be listed. I will have the results in my master listings but since the weight given to those games is now almost nothing I will not be showing them. I will include columns for non-conference games of varying types mostly for information purposes.

This last week UBC, Waterloo, and Queen's all lost games to lower ranked teams. I don't think any will jump from B to A any time soon.

However, Moncton made the big jump. And since there was a series of wonky results elsewhere they made a huge jump all the way to #4. The AUS was in transition. St. F-X and St. Mary's remain in A, for now. But with Dalhousie dropping from B to C there are currently no AUS teams left at B level. That is not likely to remain the case much longer.

None of the B level teams in the OUA can keep it going for too long. Waterloo looked ready to make a run for A level but now have a 4-3-0 record without having played any A teams. They lost to Laurier and Queen's lost to Ryerson on the weekend. Between B and C level, Windsor is close to going down and Concordia close to going up.

In the OHT34 and in football's OHT27 I do NOT reverse results to reflect off-ice decisions. Therefore Manitoba's OTW over Alberta stands for rankings purposes.

Taking all that into account, here's the rankings:

Can someone enlighten me on WTF happen with the results from the Manitoba/Alberta Series, I know Manitoba won in Overtime, but I see their record was changed to an overtime lose instead of a win. Did Alberta's Record change from a overtime loss to a win? How could a result take place like this? I have never seen a game win - loss result being reversed after the fact, unless their was a illegal player, or rule broken and investigated, whats up?

It all had to do with Alberta cheating on a line change that led to the goal (in overtime), and getting called for too-many-men on the ice after the fact. After a long on-ice discussion play continued and later Manitoba scored. Alberta later protested the call as coming too late and that is shouldn't have nullified the goal. They won the protest and had the Manitoba OT win overturned.

I watched the webcast and Evan Daum (who was doing colour) covered it well at the time here: http://www.cisblog.ca/2011/10/hockey...y-roundup.html and here: http://www.southcampussports.com/201...are-drake.html

OHT34 #5: November 9, 2011

OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 – NOVEMBER 7, 2011

You will see that there was very little movement in this poll. It seems almost every team in the country had a split.

Since I was a couple of days later than usual in posting this ranking, it seems that the official pollsters went a little nuts without the guiding light of wisdom known as the OHT34. Lakehead a top 10 team? They split with Laurier you fools! They have a respectable record but have had a weak schedule thus far.

I have been running late so I have not amended the format of the table to just list records of the exhibitions/pre-season/ non-conference games by category. Hopefully this will be done by the next poll.

Hollywood, you put a lot of work into this, and for that I thank you. What does it say for the AUS that 6 of the 8 teams are ranked above B+ in your system? It is certainly a great time to be a fan of AUS hockey, we have some amazing teams down here.

As much as it may surprise some who know me, I don't think you have given STU enough credit (yes, I said that), they have played really tight games against A ranked teams, and are MILES above the team they iced last year.

Having said that, I believe this ranking system is much more accurate (CIS wide) then the top 10 that goes out each week from the CIS.

Thanks again.

I want to go on record right now tha lakehead is a top ten team! They put played uqtr both games IMO they lost by one goal twice to McGill and both those games could have gone either way. The Laurier loss was just one of those nights a weaker team has a goalie steal a game for you! Check the shots out.... Daniels is a great goalie.
