How has Sheldon Souray been playing this year?

oiler fan I come in peace

I see Souray has 5 pts in 7 games--other than the pts--how has his play been. Reports we had last year was that he had lost a step and only had his slap shot now

How has his OVERALL play been

So in the 4 games since something was last said you want an update? He's been good.

is he a step slow?

At the last deadline--the reports where that a few teams were interested in SS but because he had slowed down no one wanted him--some of us are thinking that there might have been a misinformation campaign against either souray or the oilers to weaken his value

It was no doubt his contract that kept other teams away.

I didn't get to see him a whole lot in past years but I don't recall him ever being a great, swift skater; he still isn't. I wouldn't say that he's a "step slow" though. He's looked pretty damn good all around from what I've seen.

Regarding the latter part of what you said above, I tend to think that was the case. He was on a local radio show here around training camp time and had virtually nothing good to say about the Oilers organization. I think he said there was something along the lines of a "misdiagnosis" of an injury that he played through and caused him to get further injured. He basically said that the way they do things in Edmonton is bush league and that he would actively tell players thinking about signing there not to.

Somehow he and Edmonton management had some massive falling out and I definitely think they would cut off their nose to spite their face where he was concerned.

here is the thing that sort of causes me to question Souray's honesty

During Souray's real good year with the oilers--I regular poster on the oiler posted that souray has asked for a trade in Jan of that year. I exchanged PMs with the guy and after a few questions he told me where he got the request and he backed it up with proof--this was interesting---from the proof he gave me--I believe that the problem with Souray started the year before he got injured.

What about that causes you to question Souray's honesty? He didn't talk about wanting a trade or not but he did say in that radio interview I mentioned that it was evident early on after he signed there that they did things shall we say, a little differently in Edmonton. Reading between those lines I can definitely see how he may have had buyer's remorse and wanted out.

None of that changes Souray's main issue with the Edmonton organization though, which is that the Oiler doctors/management mishandled an injury. I know you're an Oiler fan and loyal to the blue and orange but given the way they tried to screw over the Kings by trading injured players and so forth, it really just lends credence to what Souray said about the Oilers organization.

Getting back to the possible trade request, if he wasn't happy and asked for a trade and subsequently he starts having all of these problems with Oilers brass it really says to me that they would go out of their way to not trade him...like a misinformation campaign that some Oilers fans seem to think may have happened. From what I understand part of that misinformation was that his shot wasn't nearly what it used to be; it's pretty damn close.

He's been solid. I am not as thrilled with him as other fans seem to be. He has taken a good number of penalties so far which he really needs to cut down on. So far good PKing and goaltending have made it a nonfactor but it is an issue that needs to be remedied.

Looks like a porn star but/thus he's played great so far.. He's had some soft calls which have hurt his stats a little but he'll be a good weapon to have in your team.

I'll take the penalties if he can spread the mean streak to the rest of the defense. In past years their inability to clear the crease was pathetic.

yeah.. call me a product of the hatcher/matvichuk/ludwig/manson/tinordi/.....pushor?/everyone-else era of stars hockey... but i'll take a few penalties from our big mean defensemen if it gives us a little snarl.

i couldn't be happier with sheldon's start to the season. he's got a cannon of a shot, has been a fit in the locker room and on the ice, and brings a little anger to a defense that has been way too polite over the past few years.

that's why special teams are so important, in my opinion. you have to be able to kill penalties to win, because you have to be able to TAKE penalties to win.

Yeah, the penalties are a minor concern. A lot of the calls have been very iffy. It's not like they're a bunch of clutch and grab penalties because he can't keep up with the pace.

We're seeing Grossman play a little meaner recently, obviously Fistric always plays mean, and if Robidas wakes up we could potentially have 4 dangerous defensemen out there on a given night from a physical standpoint for the other team.

This could probably be merged with the other Souray thread?

Isles fan here, and I am real happy that Souray got another shot and is playing real well. I am furious that we didn't pick him up off waivers, as we have a buttload of money to spend, and reuniting him with Streit would have been great, especially on the power play. I just wish our ownership wasn't so ****ed up and we could have actually made a move for him. Good for you guys though, and keep it up Sheldon!

Souray alone makes up for losing Richards (statistically). It's been amazing so far.

And when you add in the rest of our new depth players (including Nystrom), you get:

6 Goals
9 Assists
15 Points
+5

Only one goal on the PP though, but with Souray's bomb, I don't think it's much of a problem.

That doesn't work, b/c those players are taking up 3 roster spots we had last year. Have to add in w/e we lost from those 3 spots.

Let's stop comparing him to Richards and just be happy with what he bring sto the blue line.

Rangers have had a tough schedule, Richards will catch fire. That's completely irrelevant though, we have a good, healthy Souray at a great price right now and that's all that should matter.

Comparing the 2 players is complete insanity. Look to the future.

Yea, I was kind of assuming you could just plug in guys like Alistar suggested in and see what happens. Just depends on who you pick.

I'm going to voice a fear here that may be bad luck to bring up but oh well. There's no denying Souray's been great. He's been pretty much everything we could have hoped for thus far on the ice and he seems like a great fit in the dressing room. He has credibility in this league that not many do based on his past accomplishments and then now with this solid start to his post-Oiler career.

It's what I call the "Lindros effect." Essentially, a very good player earns a large role on his (new) team only to get injured, thus creating a larger void to fill than one would have expected. Souray needs to stay out of fights and stay on the ice. If he is injured for any kind of significant time I think this team will find it very hard to compete for a playoff spot, if it weren't tough enough already.

Looks like the fresh start he is getting is doing him wonders. He has an absolute cannon from the point and his presence is being felt, hopefully it lasts!

Souray has been better than I hoped. I was expecting the shot to be good, but was fearful that lack of mobility would put him out of position & make him too much of a defensive liability.

That hasn't been the case though. He's certainly not the fastest/quickest guy out there, but he's always in the right spot and/or goes to the right place. If his lack of speed does allow a forechecker to challenge him, then he just uses his size to fend the guy off and makes a nice simple play to get the puck out of trouble or to a team mate.

My only complaint would be the penalties. A few too many, and a few being somewhat poor penalties to take.

As a side note.. He's been on the 2nd PP unit, not the first. Gulutzun is still searching for a spark on the PP - so far that's about all that hasn't gone well for the Stars.
