it's just such a tough conference that it's highly unlikely. i do think they will still be in the hunt come trade deadline if:

1. Habby continues to be challenged by Dubby and thus plays solidly like he has so far.
2. if Gilbert/Potter/Petry/Smid are as good all year as the have been thus far.
3. if RNH isn't just experiencing early rookie dumb luck.

Habby might have a good season, the other 2 are pretty big ifs.

They're going to the playoffs barring a major injury bug.
Then you're going to have to make the Oilers your pallbearers so they can let you down one last time... Well I hope they don't.

Okay so at the seven game mark the oilers have displayed to me that they can compete in EVERY game they play. With Renney's system this team could very well pushing for the playoffs as soon as this year!

Who would have thought at the 7 game mark we would be in 9th place with our #1 goalie NIK KHAB among the leagues best in GA and save %?

Have a top 10 PK and top 15 PP?

Allowed 12 goals in seven games ?

RNH would be leading the team in goals and be among the top point producers in the league ?

Hall and Eberle would be near a pt/pp with assisits ?

Some dude that's name resembles a famous wizard would step into a top 4 role and anchor our D ? Seriously where the **** has this kid been hiding and how did Renney know he would turn out this good?

All the games the oilers would play save 2, would be decided by one goal ?

The only two that were not 1 goal games the oilers would win ?

Can the oilers make the playoffs this year? I'm gonna say that if they continue this TEAM defense and it continues to payoff (106 cashes 2 or 3 chances were undefeated BTW). Then yes we can .And if we can get a really good match up in the first round who knows what could happen...........

Hello RED WINGS win in 06! That's what started the amazing run playing against the best and matching them step for step.

I'll never forget game 6 "The shot it. It hit Ryan Smyth1 they've done it!! The edmonton oilers have won their first playoff series in eight years and the best team in hockey is going home"

Get to the dance and you are forced to elevate your play to match your opponent this is what I've seen so far from this team. The ability to elevate their game to match their opponents. We have beat some very quality teams this year and easily could be 7-0! We are going to playoffs and I hope we meet the Wings first round!

As usual fans get excited too early based on a small sample. I would wait until 60 games are played to get a true read of this team. So far it looks like they have improved immensely so I hope the wheels don't fall off at some point in the season.

Things that are obvious:

By replacing Foster, Fraser, JFJ, Strudwick, Smac, Cogs, etc. you can't help but improve at least a little.

The improved faceoff wins, better D from Gilbert ans Smid and resurrection of Khabby is a huge factor.

Smyth and Belanger has given the team a much needed veteran presence who can compete and teach.

The only downer is Sutton (ok but slow and mistake prone) Peckham and Omark's play.

I think it's a bit early to be thinking we're playoff-bound.

However, is it just me or does something feel different this year? I can't put my finger on it... it just seems that the team plays a more complete game in several intangibles. We've had good starts in recent years and then collapsed not long afterwards because they were mostly squeaker wins that came from youthful energy.

No... this feels different. It's more complete with each game.

Whether that means we can keep chipping away at becoming a strong, playoff-bound team ... I really don't know. I have to admit I really didn't expect to see the Oilers play such a disciplined system this year. I expected more flash-and-dash. I expected we would soar or sink, very easily falling into one of two categories like the last few years.

Now I have no idea what's going to happen. There are so many possibilities of how this season could go that it's no longer black-and-white.

And I think I like that.
