Matt Carle Appreciation Thread

Going to give some props to Matt Carle so far this season. Seems to be in the right places and a little more offensively active near the crease, which is nice. That or he and Coburn switched brains this past offseason.

Go Flyers!

It's not like you to go out of your way to praise Carle.

Honestly, I hope this is a joke...

He has still been terribly defensively, he has still had quite a few giveaways, a few lucky goals where he just happens to be in the right place and is the beneficiary of others' great plays (in the case of last night's goal, Voracek and Briere) doesn't make up for that.

But yes, Coburn has been worse. And unfortuantely, Lilja has been worse than both of them combined.

He doesn't deserve any appreciation. He has continued to play terrible.

We needed our yearly tradition of the "Matt Carle Appreciation Thread" made by DenverBone. It wouldnt be HF without it.

He hasn't been terrible. He's the same old Matt Carle.

95% of the game he looks brilliant, 5% of the game ruins it for him.

I love Carle as much as the next guy, but I think openly praising Carle like this is how women get men under their thumbs.

Then it was the year before? I swear it was you. Maybe it was Vansciver. There arent many super Matt Carle fans on here, so the list I had to choose from was short.

And I like Matt Carle, he always ends up being the scapegoat, sometimes his play is crappy, but he has a lot of good nights that go unrecognized.

He's also a class act off the ice.

He's been good so far. He's had a few carlish moments, but they've paled in comparison to other players mistakes

His first goal he almost failed completley....

Quick dove over to try to save the puck and he had a whole left side of the net to shoot at but he puts it right in the middle of the net. Luckily it squeeked under Quick's arm...

Was this supposed to imply something good for Carle? Coburn has never really been what I'd call a cerebral player.

He is a solid and a very smart D. Him and Pronger have some good chemistry together too that is for sure.

He isn't the big hitter that Mez is or the fast skater Coburn is but he is a better positional player then both of them. The only time he seems out of position is when he jumps up on the play because that is what the system calls for. The 2 on 1's against us all the time is because of the system, which is why they went out and signed a top goalie.

Carle needs to get a contract extension to about what he is making now.

Carle is so underrated. Every defenseman in the league makes mistakes, but since his name isn't Timonen or Pronger he turns into the scapegoat. I'm not saying Carle is better than those two, but he gets a lot of UNMERITED criticism.

Its just that his mistakes stick out alot more. Timonen and Pronger are put in harder/bigger situations and usually come out pretty strong. They can make small mistakes here and there, but doesnt affect the team in a large way. Small mistakes are easy to forget, but its the big ones that get noticed, and sadly for Carle he doesnt make ALOT of mistakes, but when he does, they can be game changing (like the opponent scoring a goal). I dont dislike Carle, I just think his defensive play is average at best and its nothing against him. He is a good #4 defender.

I haven't seen one bad thing on here about Mesz or Coburn yet Carle is still getting crap for his defensive play. Confuses me.

Meszaros was out worst defender last game. Coburn had a pretty bad game also. Honestly, in the GDT, Carle hasnt been getting alot crap from what I see. Most the complaining is about Hartnell (which is warranted) Its threads like these where you focus on one player in particular where his flaws get pointed out.

Agreed. He logs tons of ice time, skates miles chasing down pucks Pronger is too slow to get to, plays vs. the other team's best, plays PP and PK, is more physical than he gets credit for, makes a lot of great passes and, well, he sucks.....
