Ironic considering in the 80's for whatever reason some holdovers didn't want to wear helmets...try rationalizing that these days. I remember after Brad Marsh got smashed in the Boston game ..I believe the same game Hextall scored which I attended...he was out with the concussion..wore the helmet for a while..and then decided he couldn't play well with it so he took it off again....

That said, injuries like this one are why I feel the 35+ rule needs to be revisited. There need to be exceptions. This was a freak incident that had nothing to do with age and/or wear and tear. Same with Lappy. If a team signs an older player who has a history of knee issues, and then that player goes down with a knee injury - then the rule makes sense. But there is nothing age-related or chronic about getting a puck to the face or a stick to the eye.
That's a great point, Dave. There are injuries and then there's the out-of-nowhere ones.

Still not a cap problem. LTIR "removes" the cap money. This is an Ed Snider's balance sheet issue only.

Nah separate them. Carle, Mez, and Coburn can be tested with each of them.

Man, I was there tonight and it scared the crap out of me. Whenever you see a professional freak out like that, it's a scary sight, because you know something serious is going on. Nothing will be as bad as being there for Lappy's puck to the face and him freaking out in the middle of the ice during the Devils series. That memory is burnt into my mind...horrible.

Seems Lappy's and Prong's reactions were very similar... scary to say the least. I would imagine in Prongers case as in Lappy's he realized his sight was not there and panic set in... a natural situation I would think, no matter how tough the player is.

I'm only hoping that the initial diagnosis is more accurate than than Lappy's... but the force had to be nowhere as strong as that puck's hitting the head, so the chance of a concussion and post symptoms has to be much less.

... Get well, Prongs... take all the time you need, but get well, Captain.

It was terrifying to watch. Hopefully no complications come out of this.

They should force their star players to wear a visor. Or there should be a clause in the contract that a player can be released if he refuses to wear a visor and sustains a potential career-ending eye damage....

His yelling on the ice was just scary to hear.

I need to remind myself not to read the boards of other teams however, nice to read a Devil fan found it difficult not to laugh at him. I couldn't picture myself finding it funny if it happened to Lapierre, and I downright despise the guy.

Anyone else worried that they are going to wear down Kimmo during the regular season once again now that Prongs is out?

Do we have the cap space to call up Gustafsson?

Yeah.. I went through there and reported like 5 or 6 guys laughing about it and saying he never plays another game again..

Not going to lie, I wasn't too upset when I saw that he wasn't going to be able to finish the game, as that fact alone significantly reduced the chance that one of our players was going to get injured. That was before I found out how severe the injury could be.

No matter who it is, you never want to see injuries like this. I wish him a speedy recovery, and more importantly, no lingering effects. Hopefully accidents like this will cause more people to consider wearing shields.

Once again, get well soon, Chris.

Please keep in mind, and I know this from personal experience, that a visor may not have prevented this at all. If Grabovski's stick was coming up on a steep angle, it could have just as easily gone under the visor. This happened to me, but with a puck. I had a visor on, puck rode up my stick - hit me in the eye. It was very scary, and I consider myself lucky to not have any lasting effects of it. 5 stitches on your eyelid is not fun!

Hope Pronger heals up and is back at it soon.

Cue the haters saying he's injury prone...

Hope he gets well soon. The team plays so much better when he's suited up.

As soon as the injury happened I didn't care about the outcome of the game, all I was worried about was Pronger. I automatically got flashbacks to Bryan Berard.

I'll be on here a lot in the next few weeks.

I heard on TSN last night that he lost vision, bleeding in the eye. Oh god, no.

Berard lost his vision as there was bleeding in his eye. Bryan's eye is a lot smaller then his other eye.

Mikhail Grabovski must feel horrible. I know he didn't mean to do it but still he must feel horrible.

eh, who can I follow from Philly (who works for the Flyers) on Twitter to get the latest updates on Chris?

Get Well Soon Pronger from Leafs Nation

Chris Therien on WIP today:

He is an advocate for all players wearing shields but "I didn't like it when I played.." because of constantly wiping it.

He said the shields are much better now and "can absorb the sweat."

"Now there is a better absorbing pad that can stop the sweat and they (visors) don't fog up as much as they used to."

"I wouldn't let Chris Pronger come back either without a shield."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, Paul Holmgren is on a scouting assignment in Detroit (per Philly Inq. and Daily News) and will update the Pronger injury later today. There was an abbreviated practice today; team travels to Montreal.
