Ennis package for OEL

Buffalo:

Ennis
Gragnani
JGL
1st

Phoenix:

Oliver Ekman-Larsson

Phoenix isn't going to make the playoffs behind Mike Smith, and they could use a bit of a boost in their rebuild. OEL is probably off the table for anything short of major overpayment, but I think this is.

It's Oliver Ekman-Larsson, not Adam Larsson. O.o

Still a great talent and prospect, but not gonna be a franchise D-man, and definitely not worth Ennis + Grags + 1st...? lol...

Why do we try to obtain top prospect who plays a position that we are strong at on the big club and in the pipeline?
It's not like we need to improve our defense core right now and even if we did, adding a player who is 20 years old with 50 NHL games under his belt isn't really a solution that makes sense when we want to win.

It makes even less sense when looking at our team and prospect pool because Ennis is one of only a couple players we have with a high offensive ceiling.
I think the only way he's traded is if it's for a player with a similar offensive ceiling that makes us a better team overall.

I don't even think it's anything close to overpayment, either.
It's a forward who their current coach would hate because he doesn't fit their philosophy, a 24 year old AHL all-star who has little NHL experience, a prospect who has a lot of potential but isn't a top prospect, and a high 1st round pick.
Phoenix surely hangs up and keeps their top prospect that they believe likely has All-Star potential instead of taking a bunch of parts that probably wouldn't mean as much to their team as OEL does.

Even if you think Ennis has something like PPG potential (which would obviously make his value high) and ignoring the fact that he doesn't fit that team's current philosophy, you have to take into account that the Western Conference is not a place for severely undersized players.
Who's the last 5'8-9'' 160-170 lbs forward to have any notable success there?
The only guy I can think of that fits that description is Steve Sullivan, but maybe I'm overlooking a few.
Even the players that are considered undersized in the West are just about the average NHL height.

So yeah, absolutely not.
At least it's not as bad as that proposal to trade our first last year to St. Louis for Phil McRae, I guess?

Agreed.

Not sure why the OP wants to get rid of an offensive talent like Ennis for a defenseman. The Sabres aren't exactly weak there right now. Adding all of those other pieces is absurd.

Ennis only gets traded for a player that helps the Sabres win a cup now...
(Doan, Morrow, Iginla)

Would you snap trade him for 2 firsts?

What about a 1st and a 2nd?

I find either of those outcomes unlikely, but I'm curious what people would be willing to gamble Ennis for.

Both teams say no to the OP, for the Sabres because they should only move Ennis for someone that helps us more now than Ennis would and Phoenix says no because OEL is going to be their best player in short time and likely an perennial All-Star.

JFB says what I want to say in better detail.

The sabres do not trade ennis for picks. They want to win the cup now. With that quote your question becomes redundant.

Ennis is good enough by himself.

With the boatload of defenseman we have now, I don't see why we make a trade for one...

This is also a large overpayment. I actually seem to like OEL more than the people in this thread, but it's still an overpayment.

Awards:
Jfb has already hit on the highpoints of why this would be a poor trade for Buffalo in terms of both asset management and positional need.
