Forward or Defenceman?

If we were to somehow keep up our losing habits the rest of the season and beat out Columbus for the first overall draft pick, would you draft a forward or a defenceman? I know it's early and it depends on what's available. If you had the choice though, what area do we need more help in?

My answer: forward

Montreal hasn't had a player they can call a superstar in YEARS. We were last amongst playoff teams last year in the scoring department and the trend has gotten even worse so far this year. We're constantly making average goalies look good. I know many of you blame Martin's defensive system and I agree to some extent, but it is glaringly obvious that we don't have a superstar; something I think the Habs need. Someone you can rely on. A player you can count on to be a constant threat every time he hits the ice (preferably a power forward that adds size and grit).

I do realize we're lacking in experience defensively with the departures of Hamrlik and Wisniewski. Some of the rookies look downright terrible out there. So, you could argue either way. I just think this team is more desperate for a star forward right now.

I'd pick the best player available, in this case, a forward

Nail, eh? But, he's yet another small guy. I don't even know anymore. There's so much wrong with this team.

The one thing I do know is we are set for goaltending. I'm a firm believer Carey is going to be the best goaltender in the NHL one day.

We need a forward, so draft a defensemen, that way in a couple years Martin can use him at forward!

You sir, are a damn genius.

Beaulieu-Subban-Weber

first line next year baby.

Cammalleri-Plekanec first defense pair.

Seriously, we need to draft a forward.

i would draft a goaltender, because you can bet Price won't want to be around a losing team for long.

In this fantasy scenario, a forward.

And not just because it's a couple of forwards projected to be the top picks come June, but also how long has it been since Montreal has had an elite offensive talent on their team? The best way to get these guys is with high picks.

This thread should even exists. The answer is too obvious: Forward.

Yakupov, Grigorenko, Galchenyuk, Forsberg all are much much better than the other forwards: Marcantuoni, Gaunce, Girgensons, Hudon, Collberg, etc.
However, Murray, Dumba, Rielly aren't that much better than Ceci, Reinhart, Matheson, Koekkoek, etc.

We desperately need our elite forward prospect.
