Don't read too much into this. Remeber when Mr. Gainey was asked what his best move as GM was? His answer - Hiring Carbo.

We all know what happened next.

Exactly that s why they call it the kiss of death,
but I m just merely reporting what they re saying on Twitter for those who wants to know.

But Imo, they ll never have a wow press nconference, I m not expecting anything new or any scoop or whatever I mean it s Gauthier and Martin here, can t expect any of that from them. They tend to do their things very silently.

#canadiens Pierre Gauthier: "this is my decision. Not Geoff Molson or jacques Martin."

Good to know whose that coming from, and apparently Martin really wasnt happy about this, I agree with the poster that said maybe it s a kick in the a** to the coaching staff.

Dont read anything into this.

PG already said the same in Anahiem, shortly after he fired his coach.
Gainey said the same about Carbo

He's gonna announce the team has gotten too big and he will do everything in his power to make us a smaller team to compete in the new NHL.

Renaud Lavoie tweeted Gauthier said, "Its a tough day for Jacques Martin. Hes losing a friend"

Quick someone make a Jacques Martin appreciation thread and show him some deep sympathy.

Pierre Gauthier via 98,5 fm, updated as I hear it :

- Pearn firing : Linked to the Habs difficulties this season.

- The only concrete thing that can be announced tonight

- There were no oppositions/conflicts in the coaching staff

- Pearn firing was a necessity to bring other changes that we'll see in a near future

- Decision wasn't to fire Pearn, but to change some things to be more efficient

- Struggles on the PP aren't the reason. It's way more "global". (whatever that means!)

- Told the players : you'll feel the changes with time.

- It's the beginning of a process that will bring global changes...

- Refused to answer (with disdain!) when a journalist asked him if there were conflicts between Pearn and Muller. Said "What does Muller have to do with this? Next question"

- Changes will be apparent for people inside the organization but probably not for fans! (that's kind of funny!)

- Martin wasn't happy with this decision. Gauthier had to convince him.

That's it!

To me, Jacques Martin lost a bit of his control on his team today.

I asked Pierre Gauthier if his hands are tied 2 make trade. He replied that many GMs have been calling him lately throwing out trade ideas

Yeah. My understanding is that it's not about the firing of an assistant-coach, it's about a "whole new global philosophy" whatever that means in Gauthier's head!

Still, it will be interesting to see how Martin deals with it.

I think the team was built for Martin, that at the end of the day he probably had more influence on how the team was structered then many other coaches in the league do.

I can't think of anything else that "thinking out of the box" could mean. Perhaps Martin's input is no longer as valued.

can anyone educate me as to how/why an assistant coach would be the one standing in the way of an organization "thinking outside the box"???

how do you makes significant "philosophical changes" by removing an assistant coach, one you don't intend to replace?

did Pearns somehow limit effectivness of the other coaches? and if the HC was adamant about wanting to keep him, doesn't that indicate that he was happy with how he coached/what he brought to the team? how will the other two assistants have any ability to change things if the HC still wants things done a certain way?

Was Pearns secretly a Jedi master who manipulated things from his modest 2nd-assistant role?

seriously, PG, if you are going to feed us pure B.S, at least come up with something more original.

lame...

I'm speculating the philosophical change is making way for a rebuild: draft your way up. Don't trade for UFAs and hope for the best a la gainey.

Are we the new leafs?

and what about this...

didn't PG's smug pre-season comments revolve around how our team would be improved in part by the continuity we had... having a roster with so many of the same players in place since '09... i think he even fed us some stat about how that ranked us compared to the rest of the league...

and then 8 games into a horrible start, he all of a sudden decides that we need some big philosophical change?

If I'm the owner of a company, and my lead manager flip flops this badly in the matter of a few weeks, waisting a perfect, scheduled opportunity (offseason) to evaluate things and make necessary changes, only to then make desperation changes in reaction to the increasingly obvious reality that he failed in properly addressing the organizational needs at the proper time.

Molson's need to perk up... I just hope they don't see this decision as PG acting decisively, because even if mistakes get made and good managers aren't afraid to react swiftly and decisively, targeting the assistant coach, while the HC argues against it, is pure cosmetics...

I think the new philosophical change is that Martin's leash got a lot shorter. Usually, the coach is free to pick his assistants, but in this case Gauthier went against his wishes...
