Crosby, Ovechkin, and Labs

never thought i'd see the day where a kings rookie goaltender would be in the same sentence as crosby and ovechkin. just to have a rookie goalie who is in contention with the same award as these highly touted prospects is pretty damn amazing. not to say im sold on him yet, but its amazing nonethless. imagine making a prediction like that in the beginning of the season

I thought that Labarbera was robbed ---- he should have been named rookie of the month for October and not Crosby.

I like Ovechkin's 8 goals and 5 assists better than Crosby's 2 goals and 12 assists and LaBarbera's stats.

I like Ovechkin's stats better than Crosby's (but I'm a Cap fan so I'm supposed to hate anything and everything Penguin ) --- but any goalie that has a GAA under two (1.77 to be exact) in today's NHL is very impressive and highly deserving of the award.

To me, the thing with LaBarbera is that he's a very old rookie at 25, has played in only 6.5 games and has played mostly weak teams. Most of the time, that could be enough to win the award, but not when two much-younger scorers are playing unbelievably like Ovechkin and Crosby are.

ovechkin was robbed!!
Crosby is being 'babied' too much.
No doubt Crosby is putting up points but compare the talent the two are plaing with. NHL is trying hard to build up 'THE NEXT ONE'

Exactly. Goalies usually get better with age.

I already posted my opinion at the Pens board, where there's a 3-page thread.
Call me a homer, but JL would have deserved it.
As maybe Lundqvist, the Rags Swedish Goalie.

I would have gone with Ovechkin and then a toss up between LaBarbera & Lundqvist. Both goalies are hot right now. But was it really any big surprise that they gave it to Sid the Kid? I think that even if he had a lesser month than he had, he still would have gotten the honor. Instead of propping him up so much, they should ramping up the media attention on his competion with all of the other rookies who are doing so well.

You think Ovechkin was robbed, check out Pavel Vorobiev. Nobody's mentioning him.

4 of Vorobiev's 15 points came in November, so he had "only" 11 points in October, whereas Crosby and Ovechkin had 14 and 13 points, respectively. I wouldn't say he was robbed of anything, except maybe an honorable mention (though he was still behind 4 others).

I was just stopping by (was actually trying to work out what was up with Nathan Dempsey as he is one of my fringe defensemen in a fantasy league) and came upon this thread. I just wanted to say that the majority of the seasoned Pens fans (ie, not the inherited Crosby-ites) didnt agree with the Rookie honor going to Crosby either.

That's not to say he wasn't playing well, as he's easily been our best player, but we generally felt the goalies LaBarbera and Lundqvist deserved the honor more. In this day and age's high scoring NHL, the GAA, particularly for Lundqvist, is impressive stuff considering what's in front of him.

In the end though, its not that relevent an honor. Now if they compiled all rookie of the months together at the end of the season and used that to award the Calder, now that's a different matter
