I don't think Aaron is much more then AHL depth. He's on a two year deal though, and next season is one-way. I'm not certain what the Jets are thinking with Gagnon to be honest.

I still cannot figure this out for the life of me.

I honestly think Zinger is overranking a bunch of AHL caliber players and getting them signed. He sees these players available and thinks they're amazing cause of how he scouted them against AHL talent when in reality they're marginal NHL players at best. Maclean is another one. I agree he was pretty risk free but he's not NHL caliber.

The Sens did this with a few guys, as well. Brian Lee springs to mind.

I think it's a negotiating tool. If Team A is offering you a 2-year, 2-way deal, and Team B is offering you a 2-year deal with 1-way in the second year for the same money, you're probably going to sign with Team B. Maybe that was the case, and they thought Gagnon would develop enough to at least be a 14th forward next year.

It actually doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things. He already has to clear waivers to be sent down. The only difference is that he will get paid $525k next year no matter what. If anything that makes him less attractive for a waiver claim by another team right now.

I suppose it gives him an inside track on a job next year, but I have to think that if he's legitimately beat out for a spot in camp next year, management will bite the bullet and pay him $525k in the AHL.

This is my view of the some of the summer signings as well. I won't lie, I sort of cringe when I think that Zinger is in a higher up position in the big leagues right now. I can't exactly explain why I feel that way.

No kidding, Gagnon, MacLean, Stapleton, Glass, McArdle, Wheeler and yes even Thorburn really only have an AHL skill set.

Forgot our two AHL D-men: Jones and Meech

I watched him a lot during his WHL career here in Seattle. Surprised he's still kicking around at this level.

I'm sorry, but this post is ridiculous.

I am not a fan of Wheeler right now, but: 252 GP 57 G 72 A 129 PTS 151 PIMs

That is not an AHL skillset.

Meech has never been given a legit shot at the NHL, Thorburn is very good at what he does at an NHL level, and MacLean may be slow but the jury is still out on whether he is an NHL talent.

Wheeler, really? That's stretching it a little too much.

I know he is in a slump here, but I don't think it's fair to say Wheeler has an AHL level skill set. He's still hit 21, 18 and 18 goals in his first 3 years.

Okay Wheeler was a bit of a stretch, he would be somewhere between the KHL and NHL level (or any top pro league where hitting and physical play is frowned upon)

The Atlanta fans seem to have a real love of Thorburn but I personally think he's a little overrated. I wasn't impressed with him in the Black Hawks game where Carcillo was left to do whatever he wanted with no one on the Jets stepping in. Kind of thought that was what Thorburn was here for. Brodie might have been a better choice.

Meech was not overly effective in the two games he played, took a few costly penalties and looked over matched against bigger forwards, the guy is already 27 so there is not a lot of upside.

good reason why meech has never been given a "legit shot" at the nhl.

same with maclean at this point. 3 full years in the ahl, and now he's on waivers again. if the jury is still out, they're certainly on the verge of making their decision.
