Voynov to Manchester

http://lakingsinsider.com/2011/10/28...otted-for-ahl/
Quote:
Barring any late-minute setbacks, Drew Doughty is expected to be in the Kings’ lineup tomorrow night against Phoenix, and the team will announce — perhaps not until tomorrow morning — that Slava Voynov will be assigned to Manchester of the AHL. Voynov practiced with the Kings today in case Doughty had any problems, but he didn’t.

See ya Slava, you'll be back.

makes the most sense...its a long season no need to knee jerk trade/waive players to make room it will shake out sooner or later. the kid has to have confidence high no risk of him leaving for russia now while he knows he is so close

Dean wouldn't do that unless someone goes off the deep end.

It's all expected, hopefully Doughty comes in and takes over.

You don't make a trade just so you have space for a young defenceman - unless he's the 2nd coming of Bobby Orr (and he isn't).
That being said - would you trade Martinez for Kyle Turris? And could you fit Turris under the cap?

This was the most obvious move. Knowing that he's around means the team can evaluate these other defensemen before making their move to fit him in, or they can trade him without losing another roster player...it had to be done.

He would if he finds out someone he covets is available.

Dean's got a surplus of NHL ready Dmen and knows he's got an opportunity to improve the team. I'd bet he's looking around to see what kind of players are available and who would be interested in a guy like Martinez. Not saying it will happen immediately, but Voynov should have put any doubt about his ability to rest in his short call up and I'd have to think that Dean is preparing to make space for him, even though it may take a few weeks/months to find the "right fit."

Disappointing, but expected. I'll echo others in that I hope VV knows it has nothing to do with his play and that he'll have a roster spot next season.

I'm sure Voynov understands. He was recalled and immediately given lots of quality ice time. The Kings would not have done that if they didn't think he was special.

I'm sure he got the talk about looking great and being right there as well as explaining the roster move reasoning (waiver-exempt) and giving him a few minor things to work on in Manchester.

Voynov has a bright future and is another example of excellent drafting done by the Lombardi regime.

I noticed both Scuderi and Johnson shoot left, but Johnson plays the right side while Scuderi plays the left side.

Usually, d-men who shoot left play the left side. Can't Johnson play the left side or learn to play the left side?

Wouldn't the following be a sensible solution?

Mitchell-Doughty
Scuderi-Voynov
Johnson-Greene
Martinez

That way, you have a veteran in each pairing AND you have a puck-mover and a defensive d-man in each pairing.

It may take Johnson some time to learn how to play the left side.... but when he eventually gets good enough.... he could move up while one of Mitchell or Scuderi moves down to the third pairing.

Nope. Not only does Turris not suit our system my Nortan anti virus is putting up large question marks next to his name. Turris needs to play in a similar system to Tampa to lift his game much like Purcell

... and now there's coffee all over my keyboard.

Seriously though, this move is vintage Lombardi: patient, privileging depth and experience, perhaps to a fault.

Martinez is ahead of him on the depth chart. That is the bottom line.

Kings will have to deal someone, because even next summer when Mitchell is a UFA, he is not the same type of player Voynov is. Doughty, Johnson and Martinez are the puck movers and similar to Voynov.

Mitchell is a stay at home veteran presence, not the same thing as a rookie puck mover....so the Kings will have to deal one of Johnson, Doughty or Martinez to make room for Voynov....bottom line. Scuderi and Greene are stay at home guys and perfect compliment to puck movers as well.

Is it time to pair Doughty and Johnson together? It's clear they both can handle the load of playing 25+ minutes a night.

Johnson - Doughty
Mitchell - Voynov
Scuderi - Martinez/Greene

Greene is tough blah blah blah, but he's also the weakest link on defense as far as I'm concerned.
