I like what he's doing from an offensive standpoint as of late, but this guy remains a total adventure on the defensive side. He cant clear the puck out if his life depended on it.
I've liked Cole's game for a few weeks now, he just wasn't getting the bounces earlier on...but he needs to work on his board play in his own zone, too many time when the pucks comes to his side, he has trouble chipping it ahead. I know he's a left wing playing the right side, but if he's to continue playing there, he needs to come deeper in his own zone to get the puck out.
Just listened to Cole's interview today and he's sorta explaining his slow start and him getting use to a new system. He said that he was use to a 2 men forecheck in Carolina.
Any1 else noticed that vs Philly and Boston our forecheck was pretty awesome and seemed to suit Cole's play style alot?

This is such an awesome clip of the Habs' forechecking:
Can we at least give Gauthier props for this? Picking up Cole was a very astute move in my humble opinion.
Euh there is still 3 yrs and a half to his contract and the guy is 33. I'm not ready yet to give Gauthier credit for this signing but I hope he continues to play the way he's been playing the last three games.

This.
The one thing that I like about Gauthier is that he identifies a need and becomes proactive in solving it. Whether its patchwork for Markov's absence, third or fourth line vet presence, mobility and youth in defense, 5 on 5 support and size (Cole), he sees the need and addresses it appropriately. He doesn't linger and let himself get backed into a corner.

Never mind scoring that will come, but Cole's size & skating has been making a difference. Gee did he ever school Chara in those 2 games. Unfortunately some fan base looks at scoring stats & nothing else. But those that eyeball the games see that this guy was a major signing. Now that JM is using him more correctly, that is.
I still think Gautier lacks social skills & maybe should remain a Ghost instead of leaky roof comments & those latest comments on the Pearn thing, that pretty much has half the City thinking mystery man upstairs. Cause when he talks at least in English, he looks stupid! We're not idiots.

Not how it works. Let's give Gautheir credit now.....so we can bash him in due time after....
So credit goes to Gauthier. Though, in all honesty, Habs fans NEVER agree on any moves.....except this one. So to me, 99% of the board would have made this move. We might not LOVE the length and the money, but the player himself? To me, it was the easiest decision of the summer. At least for us who sees size and scoring as a must on this team.
But credit to Gauthier for thinking "outside the box"...that big guys are needed in this team too....

Judging from comments from the national media, the out of the box thinking was that the cap increases had changed what overpaid means and that Erik Cole was a good player in of himself and not merely the product of Eric Staal.
