Garrioch: CGY, CLB, LA and TB (Bernier, Penner, Brassard, Bourque) Trade Rumors?

It's a slow Sunday morning here, so here's some rumors from Bruce Garrioch's Sunday morning column.

Calgary
Quote:
Calgary GM Jay Feaster has been working the phones hard with no success. The issue: Heís offering players who are of little interest, including LW Niklas Hagman, RW David Moss and C Matt Stajan. LW Rene Bourque is the most attractive player Feaster has, but even heís got a lot of cash left on his deal. ďThe Flames have to accept itís time for them to rebuild,Ē said an NHL executive.
Columbus
Quote:
The Jackets are trying to make changes, but GM Scott Howson hasnít been able to find a trade partner. His refusal to fire coach Scott Arniel is curious, but a couple of more losses and Howson might not have a choice. The Jackets are fielding calls for D Kris Russell and C Derick Brassard.
Los Angeles
Quote:
The Kings are looking to move LW Dustin Penner. Acquired from the Oilers at last yearís trade deadline, he is in the final year of a contract that pays him $4.25 million. He might attract some interest when more time ticks off his contract.
Tampa Bay
Quote:
Tampa GM Steve Yzerman isnít ready to push the panic button, but he does have concerns about the play of veteran G Dwayne Roloson. The Lightning could look to bolster its netminding before the trade deadline. Tampa tried to acquire G Jonathan Bernier at the draft in June and there is talk the Kings may move him at some point.

I'm thinking these are mostly Garroich looking at team's and guessing who might be available (Penner bag-skated? Probably being traded), but there's some interesting possibilities and players discussed here. If nothing else it's good Sunday morning discussion.

They all seem like pieces that could be moved by the deadline.

I like Brassard and hope for him that he gets traded for a change of scenary. I think he still has a good career ahead of him.

Bourque to the Pens seems like the best fit.

Would the Lightning move Hedman if the right deal came along?

Nobody has interest in David Moss, a 20 goal scorer, kills penalties, and only makes $1.3M?

Garrioch is an idiot. He's no better than Eklund these days.

I'd love Bourque in Pittsburgh, but Calgary management seems set on "win now" so I don't see a fit for the teams as trade partners. If Calgary were to go the rebuild route I'd offer something like:

Tangradi
Jeffrey/Letestu
Strait/Bortuzzo/Harrington

By right, you must mean massive overpayment.

Bernier for Hedman is something Yzerman just laughs at.

He's still got the potential to become a top 5 d-man in the game, and he has been playing very well recently. Bernier's good, but not enough to garter a straight up trade.

Even then, Kings have plenty of Defensemen right now, it's a deal that doesn't make much sense right now for L.A. The biggest problem for that team is...well...Penner. Packaging up Bernier with a pick and Voynov/Martinez for an actual LW'er is more feasible to the Dean Lombardi ship.

The most I'd give up for Penner right now is a 4th rounder and an average prospect.

Kings are better holding onto him and hoping he improves or at least has better value at the deadline.

What would the Blue Jackets want for Brassard?

And I wonder how long until the Flames place Hagman on waivers.

Jackets desperately need an upgrade for their defense.

Could a three way deal actually make sense here?

LA: Gets Bourque (3.33) +/-
I am sure there would have to be a large plus for them to move Bernier? But they dump Penner's contract and upgrade the wing slot.
-2.167 Mil

Calgary: Gets Brassard (3.2) + Penner (4.25) +/-
Calgary gets a potential 1st line center, and maybe Penner can turns things around back in Alberta? Penner's Contract doesn't hurt Calgary over the long term as it expires this year.
+1.62 (Puts Calgary tight against the cap, maybe the could move Penner closer to the deadline for a pick if he turns it around)

Columbus: Gets Bernier (1.25) and lets say Babchuk? (2.5) +/-
+0.55

I think Columbus would have to send something here to LA, although I am not sure what, but does anyone else see a basis for a trade here?

Feaster's traded a couple of decent picks already so maybe he's hoping to scrape up a late pick to start the stockpiling process.

Not bad but I dont think we need a PP specialist in Anton...give us someone that can play defense.

Not happening, if Hedman is going out, we aren't taking Penner in return.

It would be Bernier+Forbort/Voynov or something like that.

1st round pick we have no need for we want to win now. If Hedman is going out a potential high impact dman has to be coming back.

Thats fine and all but the Flames would still need to eat some of Hagman's contract to make even swapping him for a late pick worthwhile. I am not sure Hagman is a better player (when you factor in cost) then a player like Brunnstrom, or waiver wire guys at this point.

they most likely want a top 4 defenseman coming back.

I think bernier to TB should happen this year, but I don't know what they could give up, because they still need some assets to acquire another top 4 dman. Maybe purcell? They traded him away and maybe they want him back, and should be a top 6 winger for them for a while(gagne and penner are obviously not long term solutions). Could be downie also.

That complicates things somewhat, maybe a 4 way deal is possible with Tampa

He is included as a cap dump for LA remember, he has little to no value atm but at least his contract expires at the end of the year. He would potentially be a gap filler for the loss of Bourque and hey maybe he plays well and you get a 2nd rounder for him at the deadline? I don't see him really hurting the flames tbh. The reason Calgary does this is Brassard if they think he can be a 1st line center, I think he would be an improvement for Calgary at this point in time.
