TSN - Dreger expects Leafs to trade for a Top 6

Darren Dreger was on Blue Breakfast on TSN1050 this morning talking about the Leafs.

He mentioned that he is starting to believe the Leafs will make the playoffs - not because of the way they have played in Oct... but because he is buying into the fact that Burke WILL make a trade to upgrade the top 6.

Thoughts?

Who is Burke targeting?
(Given Dreger's comments, it's obviously someone who would be a significant upgrade)

What would he be willing to give up?
(Again - you would think it's going to have to be significant)

Please try to keep this realistic and civil!

Just looks like obvious speculation to me.

Darren Dreger says this every 6 weeks, and the only reason he keeps saying is to string the sheep along and bump TSN ratings and ad revenue. Seriously, ever few weeks you hear "Dreger: Leafs expect to upgrade C position", "Dreger: don't rule Burke out on the trade market", etc etc etc.

Nothing ever changes but the dates.

Seriously. I've noticed Dreger's becoming much more gossip and much less factual lately.

Except the top guys (ie. MacKenzie, Dreger) don't put things like this out there based on "Speculation".

If this was coming from some anonymous blogger (you know who I'm referring to), or even some lower level MSM, I would agree.

But coming from Dreger it has substance.

As saskyoil said, Dreger seems to have become more "gossip" than based rumours in the past few months. That's not to say that he isn't reliable, but the "rumours" he posts don't come true as much as before.

I remember when he said Kaberle was worth at best a second rounder a few days before Boston traded for him.

Fair, but im not convinced its really gossip as much as its just truth. The GM's are working the phones dilligently, and just because there is no clear upgrade or good move available now doesnt mean that they arent trying to.

Agreed!

Penner wouldn't bump Kessel, Lupul, MacArthur or Kulemin.

Any player targeted in this scenario would have to be able to bump one of these guys (or Connolly or Grabo).

Doesn't make too much sense for the Leafs - who would be the odd man out in the Top 6? Lupul, Connolly, and Kessel have shown that they can play together, and the Grabo, Kulemin, and MacA line has started clicking as well.

Who is the odd man out? While I see the potential for upgrades, it doesn't make a lot of sense to break up these lines when the Leafs have started off the season so well.

It's not gossip and it isn't a rumour. It's just an obvious statement. When isn't Burke in the market for a top six forward? All Dreger is saying is Burke wants to improve. Well yeah, no spit Sherlock.

The only player I can think of is Morrow. Which I highly doubt would ever happen.

I gotta think it's either LW or C, and it would have to be legit top-3. Lupul has filled in nicely but I don't think he's more than a 50pt guy. Connolly is also starting nicely but we all know the injury histories.

Makes no sense for a top-6, would have to be legit top line talent.

Don't know why Dallas would trade their captain when they've come off to such a great start.

Don't get the Turris hype. When did 11 career NHL goals and a bad attitude upgrade your top 6?

Despite the "where does he fit?" posts, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Penner, to be honest. He's a top-six player (obviously a low-end one, but nevertheless), played for Burke before, and likely wouldn't cost much to acquire. Let's face it, there are no cheap bonafide top-six players at this time of the year, generally speaking.

He's burned bridges with Burke, though, hasn't he? He doesn't exactly fit the type of player that Burke is looking for, either.

If he could be had very cheap, I could see it, but as of now, both MacArthur and Lupul are superior top 6 LW options to Penner.
