Ranger fans what would you give up for him .. We need a 3rd liner badly, Lombardi and Bozak just arnt clicking right now and that line badly needs a shake up with Armstrong not looking like he will return in till mid December
I think many people are overrating Franson around here. Right now, he is nothing more than good bottom-pairing d-man who can play decent on the PP and has a great accuracy for a shot. Sure he has potential to be #4 or even more down the road, but at this point he hasn't shown much contribution to deserve a top 4 spot on our blueline.
If he indeed does get traded, highly unlikely it will be anything significant. I had be okay with a 2nd round pick.
I am sorry but did I miss something? Bozak an overpaid 3rd liner? He is making 1.5M/yr. He is perfectly playing great for his role on the 3rd line. If anything he is underpaid.
Regardless, that offer is atrocious for Rangers.
Upon further inspection, you're correct. I thought his cap hit was still $3.7M. $1.5M is more in line with what he should be getting. Still, I have no desire to take on a player that is -31 in 128 NHL games. It's not like he's that young, either.
Franson is a RD, which is a big reason he's been unable to fit into our system. We already have Phanouf, Schenn, and Komisarek playing that side. Wilson tried moving him to the left side, but it hasn't really worked out. The fact is that Toronto never needed him. It was an opportunistic trade that allowed us to essentially buy a speedy third liner and a big, young defenseman who can play the PP.
Franson has a good skillset, and he's 6'5. A bit slow, but has top-four upside. He's on an entry-level contract, so there isn't really any reason to trade him for plugs or prospects that are unlikely to make the NHL.
Honestly, that's not a bad deal in terms of value. However, I'm pretty sure Sather would be lynched if he traded a fan favorite, heart and soul player in Prust for a healthy scratch. Now, before getting defensive, I know Franson is good enough to be in the NHL, and I'm not saying he's a scrub, but that's how it will be perceived by the fanbase.
