I could be wrong. I've been digging for info on Wilson and Missiaen since the start of the season, only to realize they were on IR in those spots a week or so back. I'll keep looking to see if there are any actual injuries.

Very nice move actually. I think that would be a goal on 95% of NHL goalies too.

Whale now have 10 defenders on their roster and only 12 fwds.
4 Stu Bickel
5 Blake Parlett
6 Wade Redden
8 Jyri Niemi
9 Brendan Bell
25 Pavel Valentenko
27 Jared Nightingale
44 Tim Erixon
77 Lee Baldwin
84 Tomas Kundratek

Something is gonna have to give... Deveaux will probably be sent down again but 10 defensemen??!!!??? If the rangers sign Strålman or McCabe - that would probably mean Woywitka gets sent down too... Will be interesting to see how this pans out. Trade Redden?

I believe Niemi has been playing 4th line wing with some PP time on the point. So that's really 9.

Also, AHL defensemen drop like flies throughout the season. It's crazy the disparity in the amount of injuries to AHL defensmen compared to NHL defensemen.

Let Niemi play wing. He's a marginal defensive prospect at this point. Send Baldwin down to Greenville. Then you're at a more reasonable 8.

It's easier to crack the NHL as a winger than anything else. It's one thing to be a #12 forward who plays a few minutes a game. It's another to play on the third pair where you have to take regular shift, more or less.

You are also less responsible. The defense that a defenseman has to play is much more than the defense that would be tolerated from a forward. And as a 12th forward, you aren't expected to score anyway.

If Niemi can do a half-decent job as a forward, he might make it as a journeyman. I don't see hm ever making the Rangers at this point, and likely no other team.

Right. As a defenseman, where is he on the depth chart in our organization? Guys ahead of him, in no particular order:

Staal
Girardi
McDonagh
Sauer
Del Zotto
Eminger
Erixon
Woywitka
Bell
Bickel
Parlett
Kundratek
Valentenko

And then in the next few years he'll likely find himself behind McIlrath and maybe a guy like Noreau. How much longer do we own his rights? He has no chance here, and should probably bolt. Not that he has much chance anywhere, but still.

That is one thing I never understood about the Rangers. With how bad their PP has been, you would think they may look for a player who could play as the 12th forward and be a Streit/Weber(Yannick)/MAB like player on the PP. Niemi has a ways to go to get to that point but he has the shot for sure.

I meant the last few years though. Why not carry someone like MAB on the 4th line, give him 5 minutes of even strength time and play him 4-5 minutes on the PP.

It limits the minutes of some other players (mainly defensemen like Staal and Girardi) and improves the PP.

Zuccarello sets up JAM for a goal in the 1st in matiné contest at Bridgeport. 1-1 in the 1st... 10 defensemen in Hartford now. Grant, Niemi, Baldwin and Kundratek (3D) sitting out. Lines: Audy-Marchessault-Mitchell-Zuccarello, Hagelin-Newbury-Thuresson, McKelvie-Tessier-Bourque and Owens-Tanski are the 11 fwds. Redden-Nightingale, Erizon-Bickel, Valentenko-Bell and Parlett are the 7 D. Talbot in net. Expect a trade for a FWD (sending a d away) soon imo...

1-1 and shots 11-11 after one period on 11/02/11...

So Zucc now has 7 points in 6 games and the 6th isn't over yet?

Despite getting crushed and a minor concussion after 3 games was it?

Not to mention a a shootout goal or two?

What a ****ing waste.

Good point. To some extent we tried with Kotalik I guess (but kind of the other way around).

But there are plenty of good PPQB's around. It definitely wouldn't have hurt to carry one of them as a 4th line winger to take some heat of MDZ over the last 18 months.

This is his 5th game, and has 6 points so far.

WhalePack up 3-1

JAM from MZA and Erixon

Mitchell from JAM

JAM from Mitchell and MZA

JAM is really putting up some crazy numbers for a rookie already.

Talbot with 1 goal allowed on 20 shots so far.

http://www.audy-marchessault.com/en/

JAM's website

I believe this puts him up to 8 points in 10 games so far?

Regarding Johnson, Zipay just tweeted the following:

"Dos Nueve News: Chad Johnson of the Connecticut Whale was named Reebok/AHL Goaltender of the Month for October. Stats: 3-0-2, 1.69 and .942"

Not too shabby. Can anybody who watched these games say if he was carrying the team or they were carrying him or if something else happened that isn't as clear cut?

And since he got another assist in that game he then now has 7 points in 5 games.

Rangers better trade him soon.

edit, looking some more at numbers I guess it's not as impressive as I thought.

Even Kris Newbury has better stats, 8 points in 5 games.

Guess AHL is just an even worse league than I thought.

There are even players on other teams with 8 points in 3 games.

I wouldn't look at other players stats. Older guys like Newbury put up a lot of points in the AHL because they've been playing there forever. They will never make it in the NHL though

JAM putting up 8 points in his first 10 AHL games is impressive. And he's a small guy, so he's not doing it with his size. He was an overager in juniors, but he's still only 21 or 22 years old.

I expected Zuccarelo to put up points though. The Swedish league is at least as good as the AHL and he played there for 2 or 3 years
