For me, his game hasnt changed much since his career started. He makes simple quick plays, has gotten harder on the boards and has become more physical each year, and he has the ability to sprinkle in some offense as well.

His style has definitely been static, but his caliber has gone up with each season (although, I'd say he was better in 08-09 than 09-10).

I remember Girardi making a LOT of bad passes in the defensive zone prior to last season; the one that sticks out in my mind the most is on Crosby's 40th goal of the season in 09-10, where he weakly threw it up the middle of the PK, and Gonchar intercepted, setting up Crosby for the tip. He's become MUCH smarter with the puck on his stick. His positioning is better, and his passing is better.

The thing with Staal is that Staal's basically a more efficient Girardi, IMO. They both play similar games, but Staal does it all smoother, while Girardi is a little more rugged (blocking shots is just an aspect of that, imo.)

Nobody forgot Girardi last season because Marc is a Staal- most of us lauded both of them as a great pairing. Then when Staal went down and Girardi looked a little out of place, some of us questioned if he's a legitimate 1st pairing D-man. This year, so far, he's put most doubts to rest.

I'm quite shocked at the response in this thread tbh.
I think you nailed it. He's better than what a lot of posters here give him credit for. And the few games Staal was out last year Girardi played really well.

Are there any better, or at least as good undrafted players in the league?

I'd don't know if I'd say Staal is smoother. He's got a bit of Marmaduke in him. Girardi seems more stable (to me).

Either way - the fact that we're having this debate is a good thing.

Hes been solid since he came into this league and like many others have said his game has not changed. However he has become better and better at the style of defense he plays.

On a slightly OT tangent: does anyone remember him in Juniors? What was he like and why did he get passed over when he was eligible for the draft? I barely remember us signing him, but do I recall correctly that he was considered a pretty good prize as an undrafted free agent? What other teams were interested in him?
Had skated with the Washington Capitals first before Rangers signed him, Washington was too busy to do their homework on this guy. Back in Junior in his last year London knights traded to get Dan to help with their defence on their run for the Memorial Cup. Dan and Marc Methot(ColumbusBlue Jackets) were the shut down pair on their blue line. Dan was the guy called on to try to shut down a kid named Crosby!

Ok this might sound outlandish, but if the season ended today Dan Girardi is my pick for Norris.

With how well McDonagh and Girardi have played, do we even consider breaking this top pairing up with the amount of poise and chemistry they've shown? (Once Staal comes back)

I wouldn't be against trying Staal with Sauer until he gets warmed up, but with that being said Staal/Girardi and Sauer/McDonagh displayed excellent chemistry last year so going back to that shouldn't be an issue.

I totally agree with you machine the chemistry that was shown last year with our top 4 D-Men was great, the pairing's were working great to shut down the opponents on most nites. The Girirdi/Staal combo did it nite in and out against the top lines thru the season, my biggest fear is that Staal maybe a long way away from returning this year. It seemes the front brass is looking around for another possible top 4 d-men, Stralman doesnt fit the bill of top 4. Hope for Girardi/McDonagh s steady work evernite in the mean time.

Two way defensemen always win the Norris. Hell, Mike Green was a finalist, which shows just how strongly offense is valued relative to defense.
