The Red Wings giving away free seats was 30 years ago.
By any reasonable set of standards, a successful sports franchise should either win or make money. It's been 11 years and the Jackets have done neither.
Yes, when they sucked.
We suck now, so we give away seats now.
See how it works?
Also, you are correct, a successful sports franchise is one that...succeeds. But that doesn't mean that a franchise that is a failure is a result of a market failure. This is the mistake people constantly make with Phoenix, for example. Did the fans that there were in Phoenix decide to move the team across town where there wasn't a fanbase and outside of the population center? Did they put a non-competitive team on ice for a decade? Are fans to blame for not wanting to see 10 plus years of losing or is that to be expected. Etc. Etc.
I don't see how Columbus' poor management has anything to do with Columbus as a market.
Some kid from Cincinnati was posting on the business board a couple years ago. He claimed the Blue Jackets should be moved to Cincinnati.
Laughable. I spent some time in Cincinnati, and its not even remotely a hockey market. The only time there's been any sort of buzz was when the Cyclones made it to the championship. But when I used to go to regular season games there or even back when the Ducks played at the Gardens, attendance was poor.
I've been to three games, and if you don't think attendance doesn't affect this bottom line of the franchise, which in turn affects the on-ince product, then I don't know what to tell you.
Yes, we get that attendance could eventually affect an organ-eye-zation's ability to ice a competitive team. The problem with your posting in here is you seem to suggest that the dwindling attendance is somehow responsible for the team's general poor performance throughout it's history. Your first post practically said "Can Columbus work as a market? This team's always bad." You haven't shown a causal link, much like Cap'n suggests below.

So because the franchise has been a sideshow for 11 years, it's the city's (and by extension, the fans') fault?
Name me another market in the US that would put up with this crap for as long as Columbus fans have.
Cleveland with the Browns, Indians. But you are correct, DJ, the question is not the market. It is a question about capable people running the franchise.
This thread, like said should either be locked or die

Are all six of your posts in this thread?
You are describing the downward, self destroying, behavior of a struggling franchise. What you are not describing is if this can be a viable market.
I'm not going to feed you anymore. No one else should either. You've already been humored for too long.
