If you want to be a tough guy in this league you have to be able to play as well. Engelland for the Pens is a good example. Game has become faster and you need to role four lines now.

Yeah, quite a few 2-minute per game enforcers seem to be passing through waivers this season.

Am I wrong in thinking Boris Valabik is a big defenceman who could help the Habs? Honest question looking for an honest answer.

Why would we claim him when we have Emelin in the pressbox ? I don't think he'd be worth it.

With Emelin in the press box and Markov getting closer to a return, it makes no sense. Add to the fact that Valabik is probably worse than anything we currently have...

I'm surprised what has become of Valabik. He was never going to live into the Chara comparisons, but he certainly seemed like a guy who could have a Hall Gill type career.

People like to bag on Gill but he's a very smart hockey player, if not always a physically capable one. The impression I've always got from Valabik is that he has rocks for brains.

Gill understands things like angling people off and using his size and reach to disrupt the other team's cycle and kill penalties. Valabik has no hockey sense whatsoever.

Gill also knows how cut it close without taking obstruction and interference penalties. He'll do subtle little things like shielding his defense partner from forecheckers when they're retrieving a dump in, he's not the most talented guy ever, but he makes the most of what he has and is very smart out there.

I was wondering where Valabik went, he was taken off of Pittsburgh's roster when he got healthy and I didn't see him on the WBS roster, now I know he finally was put on waivers (hopefully to go down to WBS)

That's the thing you can be a horrible skater and still be a useful d-man, but you need to have hockey sense.

Kassian is a decent fighter, no? I could see a few teams interested.

Interesting to see if anyone take Ritola. Hasn't done much at the NHL level, but was quite good in the AHL last year.

As for Kassian yet another 2 minute fighter going down.

I'd take him in Montreal and give him spot duty here and there in those rivalry games. But i'm sure Gauthier won't pick him up.

I could see Ottawa or perhaps Detroit claiming Ritola. I wonder whose the better player Ritola or Emmerton?

That would mean Szczechura is finally cleared medically. Rochester needs the help.

Szczechura clears waivers.

Winnipeg puts Kenndal McArdle on waivers.

Florida puts Adam Comrie on $100 (Release/Buy-Out) waivers. Likely, he wants to either head overseas or quit hockey altogether.

It seems like a random move...but I don't think that Comrie is quitting hockey. Why would he quit when he is leading the Cincinnati Cyclones with 6 points in 4 games?

I see one logical explanation ; San Antonio Rampage recalled basically all the players from their two affiliates (Rio Grande CHL and Cincinnati ECHL) this week, except Comrie. Comrie was probably pissed by the situation and asked to be released. I guess that he'll keep on playing with the Cyclones but he is now free to sign with the 29 other AHL teams.

I think a similar situation happened with JD Watt last year. He asked to be released from his ELC because he wasn't getting enough playing time.

Also, the Panther are close to the 50 contract limit. They are currently at 49 (counting Comrie).

Mark Fraser and Rod Pelley put on waivers today, second time this season for both of them. Makes sense, though, I believe once waived a player can move freely between AHL/NHL for a period of 30 days and that period had to be coming to an end soon for Fraser and Pelley.

Tom Gulitti said that both Pelley and Fraser were put on waivers to give them a chance to catch on with another team. If they both clear, they will remain on the Devils roster for now.

I was honestly surprised to see Fraser make the Devils' roster this year. I actually didn't even expect him to be qualified in the summer to begin with. I've never been even close to impressed by him. He'll scrap and play some minimum minutes, but for the most part he isn't anything more than a 7th guy.

Pelly is somewhat useful I think; he's not too bad for the 4th line. I doubt there will be any takers for either of them, but classy of the Devils to try to help the two play elsewhere.
