1st overall would cost 8th+Rundblad+2nd

Even if you had the 2nd overall pick and included the rest of that deal, you'd get laughed at.
You never know, Florida traded the first overall pick(Fleury) and the 73rd pick(Carcillo to the pens for the 3rd overall pick(Nathan Horton), the 55th overall pick(Stefan meyer) and mikeal samuelsson. Im pretty sure it's possible to happen but there is no way in hell BM will give up rundblad the 8th and the 38th pick for Yakupov. He will get it done but not with rundblad, cowen or spezza in the deal. It can be possibly done with a deal revolving around wiercioch, a 1st, a 2nd and more valuable pieces.

And that's why it hasn't happened since.

Slightly different question, from the same premise.

If Ottawa drafts 8-12th or even higher (lower?)...does it set back the rebuild? (similar to Colorado)

Definitely not. This is going to be a very, very deep draft. Guys are putting up numbers similar to Backstrom in the SEL who are projected to go where we might draft.

Plus, Ottawa already has a very solid core in the NHL(Spezza, Karlsson, Cowen, Rundblad, Michalek, Greening, Smith, Condra)

As well as very strong prospects still not in the NHL(Zibanejad, Silfverberg, Lehner, 1st round pick in 2012, Puempel, Stone, Pageau, Petersson)

Combine that with the large amount of cash to spend on UFA's and Ottawa has the makers of contenders for years to come.

Ottawa just needs to continue smart drafting and free agent signings.
