The Gomez Signing was the best thing to happen to the Rangers

Pretext: Rangers needed a #1 center
They sign Gomez to a 7 yr contract worth 51 mil and sign Drury to a 5 yr contract worth 35 mil

After 2 years his play, while still decent for a #2 Center, starts to decline and the Rangers trade him, Busto, Pyatt for McDonagh, Valentenko, and Higgins.

Because of that extra cap space that allowed us to sign Marian Gaborik
Once Higgins didn't work out, they traded him and Kotalik for Jokinen and Prust
McDonagh comes up and acclimates quickly to the NHL game, allowing us to move Rosizval and his 5 mil cap hit

So after this signing what did we get and what did we lose?
Get: A rising defenseman that could be as low as a #4 or high as #2 (Maybe #1)
An elite sniper who can score from anywhere, albeit he had a rough year last year
A grinding forward who shouldve been a throw-in but turned out to be one of the hearts of the team

Loss: A declining center who couldnt even top 40 points last year
A couple of grinders who are replacable (Pyatt, Higgins)
A defenseman whos cap hit was too high

Yeah, Sather may have totally signed Gomez to the wrong contract but at least I think he more then made up for it.

Yeah, he got lucky on this one. But we still have part of the cap hit from drury, and having to deal with redden still.

Well Drury and Redden have nothing to do with the Gomez signing. As great of a turnout it became, hopefully we never have to go through this again. We may not get this lucky next time.

I'll say it. McDonaghs looked like a top pairing defenseman this season. at times i think hes looked better than Girardi.

I'm just saying that to make the point he shouldn't be praised for a crappy signing. He got lucky with unloading it, but it was still a way overpriced signing.

I think what's more impressive with that deal was we didnt hae to unload young players to get out of that terrible contract. Glen got away with it sure, but give credit where credit is due. Could you imagine if we didn't sign Gomez, who knows what our team would look like

Yeah, what few realize is that if we hadn't signed Gomez and then used him to acquire McDonagh, we would not have been able to trade away Rosie, which means we would have a very hard time signing Brad Richards. I don't see it happening if Rosie is getting paid $5 instead of $1 for McD.

So the signing of Gomez not only got us McDonagh and Prust, but also Richards.

Well ultimately he will likely surpass Girardi on the depth chart. Perhaps it will be another year or two...but it should happen sooner or later.

To be honest we lucked out big time. In every other parallel universe Gomez's cap hit is still hitting us hard in the summer.

We lucked out, but I didn't have too much of a problem with that contract in my books due to him playing a big part in eliminating the Devils.

Good one.

I like to look at it simple like this: We had Drury, Gomez and Redden. Now we have Gaborik, Richards and McD. So I'm happy

Actually, it's more like getting rid of Gomez was the best thing that happened to the Rangers. If the Rangers had kept Gomez, they'd still be in cap hell, and with a great deal less talent. Thank you again, Bob Gainey.

Haha...you mean if this was anytime between 1997 and 2004?

I have always thought that same question. It was like McD was a throw into the deal.

Gainey must has saw something in McD he did not like. Who knows..

All I know is was a steal of a trade for Sather while getting rid of a bad contract in Gomez.

Besides being stupid....
They didn't think his offense would develop.

I will complicate it a bit and look at our trading the past 4 years...

We had:

Scott Gomez (Montreal)
Tom Pyatt (Tampa via Montreal)
Ales Kotalik (Europe)
Michael Busto (AHL)
Wade Redden (AHL - still on NYR payrole)
Chris Drury (retired)
Donald Brashear (retired)

Now we have:
Marian Gaborik
Brad Richards
Brandon Prust
Ryan McDonaugh
Pavel Valentenko (AHL)

We also had:
Todd White (retired) that is costing us 527.000 of cap overage this year due to sloppy management last season.

That was the good part of our trading (well - Drury´s considerable buyout cost of around $5,5M in total is still with us though - prohibiting a pickup of for example Jagr/Prospal/Souray for this year...).

The bad part of our recent trading is that we had Lauri Korpikoski & Fedor Tyutin. We got Enver Lisin & Nik Zherdev. Bye bye to them.

The remain to be seen (Players from the last 4 drafts) includes:

We had Michal Rozsival. We now have Wojtek Wolski. Created 1,2 M in cap space though...

We had
Roman Horak (now in NHL with Calgary)
Evgeny Grachev (now in NHL with St Louis)
Bobby Sanguinetti (AHL - bust?)
Ethan Werek (AHL - bust?)
a 2nd rounder in 2009 (Kenny Ryan AHL)
a 3rd rounder in 2010 (Jordan Weal juniors)
a 5th rounder in 2010 (Tanner Lane bust?)
2 2nd rounders (Tyler Wotherspoon & Markus Granlund) in 2011
a 3rd rounder (Logan Shaw) in 2011

We now have:
Brian Boyle (NHL NYR)
Tim Erixon (AHL)
Oscar Lindberg (SEL)
Jesper Fasth (SEL)
Jyri Niemi (AHL)
Steven Fogarty (juniors)
Shane McColgan (juniors)

We also got a few "rental" games with Nik Antropov (2009), Oli Jokinen (2010) & Bryan McCabe (2011) - all of whom we later did not resign. But since we made the playoffs 2 of these three years - on the last game of the season - one might say they contributed to help make the playoffs (but at the same time worsening our draft positions as we both in 2009 & 2011 got eliminated in 1st round exits from Washington).
This part will imo be very interesting 5 years from now to see how things pan out...

Top 3 round picks still in NYR development system include:
Current NHL players on The NYR from the last 4 drafts :
Michael Del Zotto & Derek Stepan

Waiver pickups:
Sean Avery
Eric Christensen
Anton Strålman

RIP Alexander Cherepenov... and Derek Boogaard

Looking at the Gomez signing and the outcome it is a no-brainer that the Rangers got much better in the longrun over this. I think McDonagh is the type of player we will still be talking about 10 years from now

If Sather hadn't spent that money on Gomez he would have signed someone else or several complimentary guys. Who knows how that would have turned out, just be happy it went the way it did.

Montreal felt that McDonagh was passed on the depth chart by guys like Subban and Weber, and I think they were not terribly happy with how his game was developing (I think the envisioned him as more of an offensive defenseman)

Montreal desperately wanted a centerman and figured that they could afford to give up a prospect whos stock was slipping in their minds. I don't think they thought he was crap, just that he was expendable and they thought they were getting a 70 point center in return

I believe the reason Mcdonagh was overlooked because the Canadiens went in such super hype mode over subban, mcdonagh kinda got leap frogged and his value went down within the organization or at least with Bob Gainey.

Here is a video i did right after the trade

Disagree with everyone here.

The Habs won the trade because they made it to the ECF 2 years ago and Gomez was on the team. McD still hasn't been able to put up 60 pts and shutdown Ovechkin!
