That being said, there's still things here that don't add up. Staal was injured on Feb 22nd. He came back on Mar 3rd and played the final 15 games of the season, plus 5 playoff games, and showed no ill effects from the hit. Then 5 months later we learn that he's suffering headaches after working out due to PCS? Was he suffering headaches after each game after he came back?

I'm of the firm belief that whatever is causing his headaches, it isn't PCS. He doesn't have any of the other systems associated with PCS and he only gets the headaches after working out. But it's frustrating that they haven't figured out yet exactly what's going on.
Another question I have, is how was he able to train in the off-season and prepare himself for camp? Was he experiencing the headaches during his off-season training? If so, did he communicate that with the team accordingly? Seemed like leading up to camp, the Rangers were anticipating Staal to be participating.... This seems like something the organization would have picked up on, much earlier than it did.... Even if they did know something, you would have thought we would have gotten wind of it via the media, much sooner than we did.

Glen Sather mentioned it may not be a concussion. He said it could be a disk issue in his neck/back.

Something doesn't add up.
This was all spelled out in interviews. The Rangers had his neck imaged and the doctors thought they saw something that might be contributing (pressing on the nerve, blah blah) so they gave him a cortison shot to see if it'd help

To me it sounds like they're doing everything they can to treat the symptoms just in case it's something else and not PCS. If it's PCS, you can't really treat it, if it's a neck issue or something, you can treat it. So, try things that might be the issue and see if it helps.

There's not a lot of "adding up" to do. He has headaches after working out hard, they think (or thought) it was a concussion but are trying to look at all solutions just in case it isn't (kinda hard to diagnose for sure as a concussion at this stage othe than just looking at symptoms)

Could be anything. Maybe he has an issue he doesn't want public and this is the story they're using to keep it private. You can make it seem like I'm sitting here in a tinfoil hat so the aliens can't find me, but the facts don't really support this story. I'm skeptical at the least.

i wasn't calling you crazy haha. just wondering what you think. i do agree its a little weird that everything was fine and then all of sudden he's experiencing headaches out of nowhere months later.

In hockey, a concussion is an injury that could be considered a worst case scenario because of it's unpredictability and the chance that the player may never be the same again. So unless it's a life-threatening disease or something, I'm not sure what injury they would be trying to cover up. If it was an injury requiring surgery, there would be a timetable for his return.

However, the Rangers organization has been very secretive about things. Maybe they are concerned that they weren't cautious enough with the concussion.

Here's what Torts said about how they treated his concussion last season:

Quote:
On whether Staal experienced headaches late last season: "When he was in Carolina, when he was hit, he hurt his knee and was shaken there too. I remember the night after, in the evening, he felt it there a little bit. I'm not sure how many games he was out with it - three. We did, we had him take a baseline test. He cleared the test, came back and played and I believe it was the Pittsburgh game where he didn't feel right. Kept him out of that, I think we kept him out of two or three games (two) from there. Again, he was cleared by the doctors and played. But then it starts up again, as he was working out this summer. He talked to (trainer Jim Ramsay) and said he was just feeling it. It was still there a little bit. So our doctors have been with him this summer, we had specialists with him as we continued to go through here..."
So we know he was experiencing some sort of PCS type symptoms last season which forced the Rangers to hold him out for a few games. I know he passed a baseline test last season, but that doesn't necessarily mean he was symptom-free (he passed a baseline test in the preseason yet was still suffering from headaches). Staal logged so many minutes towards the end of last season and I'm hoping that didn't make matters worse.

I asked Larry Brooks if he thought Staal would be out for the year. Here's his response.

Meh. That's not much of a response, so I don't think anyone should get nervous over it. Anyone could have made that same response. Good article you wrote by the way.

Missing Staal does hurt but this team defense is playing great. They are 6th in the NHL in GAA this year. Very similar to last year when Staal was in the line up.

I know it is still early in the season but you have to like what is happening on this team. Many players are stepping up. This is a very good defense even without Staal. The goaltending is very good also and the offense is starting to come around.

Both McD and MDZ have stepped up big time this year, and Girardi is in beast mode. Has made the loss of Staal easier on the team. Just think how set the D would be if he was in the lineup...

The Rangers have won 4 straight. 7-3-3. Wait until the Rangers lose a game. The fire Torts and trade 1/2 the team threads will reappear. Lets go get Ryan Suter who will command $7M from Nashville or as a free agent or Rick Nash at $7.8M.

The Staal situation is typical of the Rangers. Just when the team starts to evolve into a very good team,Staal suffers a significant injury. Brian Leetch suffered two major injuries in 1992-93 which derailed the Rangers season. Hurt his shoulder in St.Louis and hurt broke his ankle slipping on black ice outside his apartment. We had a freak March snowstorm the previous week.

When is Crosby going to return? Perron has missed an entire year. It was one year a few days ago when Perron was concussed by Mr.Softie from San Jose. Perron passed his baseline test about a month ago. He was not able to pass the test for clearance to begin skating.

Staal has passed two baseline tests and gets migraines after skating. One report from Canada said Staal was skating by himself in Canada.

There's no doubt I think a guy like Suter would benefit this team now and if we were going to push deep into the playoff's. These guy's like Woywitka, Bell, Stralman etc. are all stop gaps in hopes Staal does return at some point late in the season. In the meantime, our top four defensemen are playing WAY TO MANY MINUTES...To think all these minutes aren't going to add up by seasons end and these guy's won't be spent is wishful at best. Trading for and resigning a guy like Suter solidifies the D in front of Hank for the forseeable future and would be nothing but a positive addition.

There is absolutely no possible way that Nashville lets Suter go unless he outright refuses to sign with them.

I wouldn't even entertain the idea that the Rangers will magically be able to trade for him. The Preds are currently working on a new contract with him and they're hoping to get their 3 top players (Rinne, Suter, and Weber) all signed up long term this year.

Bottom line, Nashville has no reason to trade Suter right now. Maybe if he refused to sign with them and they were a terrible team by the deadline, but I think all of those things are very unlikely

Eric Staal talks about the hit on Marc

Quote:
"I wouldn't say it has kept me awake at night, but it's tough. If I could take it back I probably wouldn't hit him knowing where we've gone and what has gone on since then. But it was one of those plays, bang-bang, happens so quickly, and I hit him hard."

So what do you think? Also according to Eric, Marc is not close to returning to the ice.

I take that as he's out for the season, but his career isn't over. Great this is our crosby officially.

Sounds like a nerve problem, to me. Disc problem, maybe. That could end a career, too, if it's really bad.

A tad maybe, but still, when you read this, hard to be cheerful.

But all the understanding between the brothers does not change the fact that, according to Eric, Marc is not close to returning to the ice. The Rangers have not made Marc Staal available for media interviews since training camp. The New York defenseman is listed as out indefinitely.
I guess the Rangers know better than Eric, but the silence surrounding the matter in hand is kinda heavy.

Do concussions ever lay dormant? Because lets not forget that Marc finished the season and the playoffs, logging huge minutes the whole time, and we didn't really see or hear anything that suggested a long term issue.
