Max Talbot

Some flyer fans said we gave him too much money this summer, and some said he was good for no more than 10 goals.

He already has 5 so far and is obviously big on the pk and a great veteran presence in the locker room.

What do you guys think about the pickup so far? Great thing about it is a strong regular season should be icing on the cake, because playoff time is where he usually earns his keep.

I like the signing, I want a John Madden, Jim Dowd type 4th line C now. 38 pct on faceoffs is horrendous, we need someone who can win at least 55-65 pct as our 4th line C. especially with how bad the rest of our C's have been at the draw.

I thought it was a very good pickup, and that was without expecting 5 goals this soon. Exceeding my expectations so far

Liked the pickup at the time, but I warned everyone about the faceoffs. I was told he improved. Well right now out of our 4 centers, he is the worse at faceoffs. I still prefer him on the wing.

Briere is doing solid in that department hovering around 53%. Giroux is at 50%. Couturier not doing so well at 42.8%

Couturier will need to get bigger before he is really good at faceoffs I think. Shorter guys can be good at them without being really strong because they get low and close to the puck and don't have to overcome so much leverage to get a strong swipe at the puck (longer arms and stick).

Would really like to see a minor move made for a faceoff specialist. Problem is, we have too many forwards as is.

I think Talbot is best used in combo w/ Couturier and Read on a 3rd line. It seems Read is at his best offensively around Couturier, as is Talbot. They really seem to have some chemistry together. That 3rd line would also be an excellent defensive line.

Someone I'd love to see the Flyers look @ is a guy like Jerred Smithson of the Predators.

He was 57.4% from the circle last year, 54.9% the year before that and he is also an excellent defensive forward / PKer. Would do wonders for our 4th line IMO.

Do you guys think there's any chance of betts making a return, or has the organization pretty much burned that bridge? What's the deal with his health? Is it really that bad that he can't play anymore? Does anyone even know what's wrong with him?

Couturier IMO is responsible for most of his offense. Talbot is a decent third line player, but he is benefiting from having a first overall talent on his line feeding him the puck. Same can be said for Hartnell benefiting from Giroux and Jagr.

Talbot plays like an animal in rut. The goal scoring probably won't continue, but this guy is a consistent pest on the forecheck.

So in other words you want one of the top 15 faceoff guys league wide as our 4th line center? That pretty much leaves our only hope by acquiring Konopka or Smithson, and well I can;t see it happening.

As much as the flyers are supposedly bad at the draw, no team dominates, and the very best as a team is only slightly over 53%. They still LOSE 47%, over the course of a game that doesnt equate to too many loses, ofcourse it is the key wins and loses that really count. I'd like to see a stat that shows defensive zone wins/loses and vice versa for offensive zone.

When you are last place in the league in face off percentage its not supposedly bad its you are bad. And yes having a guy like Konopka or Smithson or Madden as a 4th line face off specialist is what this team needs.

It was never realistic to expect talbot to do heavy lifting in the circle

I like him a lot, though

I think it's a good pickup. Like everyone else I'd like his faceoffs to improve, but I think his defense and sandpaper style of play are what he was signed for.

I like what he's brought to the team thus far....nice addition. Seems like a good locker room guy as suggested by the A he got when Briere was out...

just tell our centers to cheat at faceoffs like the pens do.. their sticks are supposed to not move prior to faceoff, yet every FO crosby takes his stick is moving and getting an early momentum. there you have it!

I to was happy about the signing. He brings more to the table than meets the eye. He is a good mentor for the young players and he is another bonding presence in the locker room. I could care less about face off %.

I really like Talbot. I was a big fan from his days in Gatineau with the Olympiques (same program that Giroux came from) and always thought he was kind of misused in Pittsburgh. I always thought he was going to produce more than he did and I think because he's such a good agitator that they stuck him on the defensive side simply because there was no room in the top six for him.

I know Talbot had one season where he won 58% of his draws, but his biggest strength is that he is clutch when it matters - the playoffs.

I know someone mentioned face off percentage and face offs won, but winning face offs is kind of misleading. I think the biggest thing about face offs is can you generate any sort of pressure after winning the face off. If you can't, then it doesn't really matter if you won the face off or not. It's a misleading stat like shots on goal. You could be a team that gives up 30 to 35 shots on goal, but if the shots are from 40 to 50 feet away and aren't coming from high percentage scoring zones or if there really isn't a scoring chance generated, does that necessarily make you a bad defensive club? I don't think so, personally, but there are others who think so simply because of the number of shots.

He scored a decent number of pts and goals in the PO where Pens won it all. Now, some people say 'what's the big deal, he played on lines with Crosby and Malkin.. of course he'll pick up pts'.

I generally dont like that argument. Most 3rd line grinder PKers, no matter who they play with, they will not score a lotta pts. The variety of 3rd line talent that the mighty Edmonton Oilers in their glory years that rode the first line with Gretzky and Kurri .. they never generated pts even when the Oil won 4 Cups in a row.

I always thought there was some significance to the number of pts Mad Max picked up that year. Paid like a third liner but producing like a born first liner. Not many can do that.

Talbot currently has a 29.4% shooting percentage on 17 shots.

Getting Talbot so far has been such a great move. I was really worried that we overpaid him but man i was so wrong. He is capable of so many different roles for this team. And his puck handling abilities continue to impress me. But what i love most about the guy is that he is a warrior and brings it every shift and finds a way to win so many battle on the boards or finds a way to get to the loose puck no matter what. He is becoming one of my favorites.

I still hate the guy I can not help it but he always gives 100% playing hard minutes, I respect that.

Wish he was better on faceoffs.

He has definitely surprised. On pace for a 40 point season. I was thinking closer to 25. Keep up the hard work Max.
