FRIDAY update:

Pronger skating and wearing a shield.

"Pronger taking part in drills..." according to Sam @ the Inq.

Chris Pronger, who has missed the last five games with an injured right eye, skated in Voorhees again on Friday and is gettingh closer to returning to action.

For the first time since he suffered the injury, Pronger took part in team drills on Friday.

General manager Paul Holmgren said he didn't know if the star defeneseman would be able to play Wednesday in Tambpa Bay, but he didn't rule it out.

"It depends on how he progresses" in the next several days, Holmgren said.

Quote:
VOORHEES, N.J. — Visor and all, Chris Pronger is back — for practice, anyway. The captain skated on his own earlier this week, but was the first one on the ice for practice Friday morning.

Following the injury, Pronger was relegated to bedrest for four days before riding a bike “gingerly” for 15 minutes. The initial timeframe according to general manager Paul Holmgren was about two weeks for recovery. Pronger’s return to practice on Friday makes that a pretty accurate prediction.

Chris Pronger skated for the third time on Friday, by himself, as he recovers from a right eye injury.

All signs seem to point toward Pronger playing either next week in Tampa Bay or next weekend in Florida.

For his part, Captain Warmth, who wore a visor on the ice, said he was withholding comment until Saturday.

“He won’t play [Saturday against Columbus],” general manager Paul Holmgren said. “He’ll take part in the morning skate. He needs some practice time with the team before he comes back, but he’s getting closer.”

Next week?

“We’ll see how he does over the next few days,” Holmgren replied. “Chris has been around the block a few times. I’m sure he’ll feel more comfortable once he gets some practice time in.”

WELLS FARGO CENTER — The Flyers stretched out at the center ice circle and Danny Briere and Chris Pronger were chatting about and adjusting their half shields. It’s still a learning process for Pronger, who has to wear the visor by Dr. Stephen Goldman’s orders after getting hit in the eye on Oct. 24.

“It is clear. So I can see through it,” said the captain. “But there is that lip and you’re used to just not really having to look, it’s just right there. It is a bit of an adjustment. Sometimes it’s something you have to do. You just get used to it.”

The 37-year-old defenseman hasn’t worn a shield since he played in juniors for the Peterborough Petes, nearly 20 years ago. The technology has changed just a bit in that time, but Pronger says he doesn’t know how comfortable he is with the visor yet because he hasn’t played in a game.

“I haven’t done anything than just skate,” said Pronger. “It hasn’t really fogged up because I haven’t really been doing much. Until I do something more dramatic, I probably don’t really have much for you.

“Nothing beats being on the ice and in games and being a part of it.”

According to all the twitter stuff, Lilja might be a scratch tomorrow, with Gustafsson pairing with Meszaros.

They were running the PP lines at practice and the two defensive pairings were

Pronger-Timonen
Meszaros-Gustafsson

EDIT: Lilja paired with Meszaros during ES.

Oh well.

Any chance of running 7 D and 11 forwards? Keep Pronger's minutes moderate for his first game back

what did we do last year during the playoffs when pronger was dressed only for powerplay? did we dress 7 D or did we just trust our other 5 to pick up the slack? can't remember.

why?

it's an eye injury, not a sports hernia. his conidtioning wasnt hampered. the eye is either ready to go (meaning he plays) or not (meaning he doesnt play)

I don't believe his vision is 100 percent. It could be better to ease him into games than dump him in and say "good luck seeing!"

edit: not that I think Pronger would approve such a plan. When he plays, I expect he'd try to return to his former workload.

You mean, like when he came back for the first game of the season after back and wrist surgery and skipped the preseason games so Lavy 'limited' him to 25 minutes?

I remember one game in the playoffs a couple years ago we ran 7 defenseman, but Sbisa played 4th line forward, so if one of our D got hurt, we'd still have 6 healthy dmen.

Pronger's status will be decided after the morning skate tomorrow. Sounds promising!
