Penguins take over top spot in TSN NHL power rankings

For whatever it is worth:

PENGUINS TAKE OVER TOP SPOT IN NHL POWER RANKINGS

The Pittsburgh Penguins have taken over top spot in the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings, climbing from third to first with one regulation loss in last eight games.

That the Penguins have been able to succeed without Sidney Crosby and, at times, without Evgeni Malkin has been a testament to the Penguins' depth -- five Pens have at least 10 points -- as well as the strong play of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who has a 1.95 goals against average and .931 save percentage.

And this without Sid back yet.

It is a testament to Shero and Bylsma. Remember all those 'the Pens will have to trade Crosby or Malkin (not to mention Staal and Fleury)' threads because a team could never have any depth being that top heavy? The Pens are a great team because of depth more than anything, which is amazing. But adding Crosby and Malkin makes them almost unfair. There is no guarentee in this sport or any other, and loaded teams lose all the time. That said, I would rather be the loaded team, wouldn't you?

There is nothing being able to have faith and trust your coaching and management. Regardless of what happens with players, you always know you're still headed in the right direction.

I can't think of anything more meaningless than "power rankings."

Heh, I did qualify 'for what it is worth'.

Still fun to see if you do not put too much stock in it.

Doesn't this guy rank teams more geared toward fantasy rankings, rather than on what teams are actually better?

I don't think it's intended to be, but probably just comes out that way.

I love TSN and I rarely visit NHL.com anymore, but I will be the first to tell you that these rankings are always off.

Don't let the ticket brokers know about this...Pens 2012 Stanley Cup Finals tickets will be up on Stubhub before you know it.

Strong suggestions!
We can add "Rob Rossi commentary"; the as of yet non-airead "Get inside the mind of Steigy" documentary and the idea of Greeks being stressed on the job .

There is a good argument to be made that the Pens are the best team in the league right now.

They had the toughest schedule to start the season. 3 trips to the West in the first month, playing at nearly every opponent's home opener. Insanity.

They had the most injuries to key players, including Crosby, Malkin, Staal, and most of the defense core at various times.

With the deck stacked against them they still manage to lead the league in points, and what losses they did incur have been very closely contested games. Unlike Washington (the number 2) they haven't dropped any embarrassing performances yet. Its a sign that the team is dialed in and focused.. and not just riding a hot streak.

The Pens deserve props for what they've done so far.

All of are losses are by 1 point, six of our nine wins are by more than 1 point. I think that speaks a lot to how competitive we've been despite the insane schedule and injuries.

I agree with this. I mean what can u say about the job they've done so far given the circumstances?

This here is sketchy. U can't use stats like that with empty netters and shootouts. The loser point n shootout muddle the standings pretty much the entire year (which is again why I say the scoring system is an abomination), but its still true they might be the best team out there.

It's no different than nameless people posting who they think is better on a message board, yet here you are.
