Not sure why so many think its going to be so high. Holmgren usually does a good job retaining players to fair contracts.

Richards
Carter
Giroux
JVR(hopefully)

Coburn at a 3.2 cap hit coming off of his play in the 2010 playoffs was also a good deal.

Different situtation because Coburn could walk after the season ends. He holds all the cards at this point while the others were RFAs. Plus, he would be stupid to take a pay cut in light of what happened to Richards and Carter.

Not the end of the world... hopefully it equates to Carle not being with this team next year and a more reliable defensive player is brought in. Not to mention, they're going to have to begin looking long and hard for a player that can begin to take on more of Pronger/Timonen's role with this team.

REPORT: Flyers Sign Coburn to Four-Year Contract Extension

Amid a huge shake up in team chemistry this summer, some things have remained a constant for the Philadelphia Flyers. There is a report today from CSNPhilly’s Tim Panaccio via twitter that the club made a move to keep a part of their defensive core intact, signing Braydon Coburn to a four-year, $18 million contract extension.

I think they feel that guy is currently under contract with the Nashville Predators.

Kinda of what was expected.. He is still only 26 years old and isn't even in his prime yet. People will just look at the numbers and say he isn't worth that kind of money, but with Kimmo, he has been one of most durable pairings. Oh yea they also play very well together haha. Solid signing IMO

Not ideal, perhaps, but I can live with that contract.

If we somehow could land Suter this summer, I'd be ecstatic. I'm not counting on that to happen though. Nashville could still re-sign him, and Detroit appears to be in a pretty good position to go out and spend some cash this summer I believe.

too much for what he brings to the table

doesnt surprise me since we're dealing with Holmgren though

Suter is going to get PAID. No was we can afford him unless Timonen retires

A bit overpaid, but he was an upcoming UFA, rather than a RFA

That's not a bad deal. It isn't really a bargain, but it's not going to break the bank. It's good he got it done now because if the cap goes up a good amount, this contract may have been bigger (see: last offseason's silly contracts league-wide).

Don't like the deal. But one of Carle or Coburn had to get signed because we don't have any prospects that can fill that void if they both left. At least it was Coburn being signed instead of Carle. Defenseman need to be the priority now because Timonen will be retiring soon.

thats pretty much how I look at it

It's an overpayment by about $500-750k, and I'd rather Coburn get that than Carle

good signing IMO, as far as im concerned Coburn > Carle. Coburn is better positionally and a lot better in the corners and doesnt turn the puck over nearly as much as carle, IMO, for the amount of **** he gets. i've always been a coburn supporter, and i think for a defenseman that isn't even at his prime yet, this is a good move.

with the cap likely rising to about 67-68.5 next year, i think a move can be made to create space for a guy like Suter, as well.

Anything that makes getting Suter/Weber here more likely I can deal with. This probably means Carle is gone and thus the process has begun. =)

It's fair for him and the team. The timing is curious because Carle must realize the writing is on the wall for him. Wonder how it affects his play.

Coburn has topped out. He isn't going to get much, if at all, better than what he already is

Shade high, but not bad. Regarding Carle, there has to be almost zero chance he signs next year, without moving someone else. We will have 4 guys making over 4 mill per already, no way to keep him .

Braydon Coburn, Jay Bouwmeester and Paul Martin are similar ES per-minute point-producers over the last 5 years. Matt Carle was too (75:55, 06-10) until he exploded last year, to surpass even Dion Phaneuf, Brent Seabook (68:00) and Kevin Bieksa (67:00) over the entire period. Matt Carle has sustained an identical ES PROD so far this year (40:00).

This should be interesting to track over the rest of the year to see if Carle has truly tapped into his full offensive potential. If he has, Carle could be in line for a Wisniewski-like payday. I don't think that would be a good idea, though, given Carle's mediocrity in his own zone and inconsistent work on the point with the man-advantage.

Coburn should be in line for a substantial deal as well, but I don't think it should be in excess of the Hamhuis contract based on TOI, ES PROD and all-around play (I know Coburn has solid relative +/- stats, but I find the behindthenet website cumbersome to use. Feel free to pick it up from there if you want to). He'll still get $4 - $4.5 M depending on years based on inflation of the market.

Edit:

Carle + Pronger > Coburn > Carle

If you ask me, they signed the right guy of the two.
