$125 waivers are indeed used for a mutual termination of a contract. The Wild did this with Petr Sykora a few years ago, which is one of the most recent instances I can remember. Even more recently during the summer just a few months ago, the Caps parted with both Anton Gustafsson and Dmitri Kugryshev using $125 waivers to release them.

Yzerman claimed him because he must have felt he was familiar enough with him that he would take a chance on him developing further and hope he could become a sort of diamond-in-the-rough. The risk was taken and didn't cost anything but it didn't work out the way the Lightning hoped. Unfortunate and disappointing but life goes on.

Yeah, Ritola's rumored to be heading back to Sweden. He didn't want to report to Norfolk and Yzerman said that he understood Ritola and didn't want to stay in the way of him if he wanted to go back to Sweden.

It does give the Jets the flexibility to send them up and recall them from the AHL waiver-free for the next 30 days, so there's that. Maybe in the case of a multi-player trade that requires them to make room and quick[C7]

Fehr should be back before the 30 day period is up, and it gives them flexibility to send any one of them down should they choose. They'll be playing for spots.

I know that those players would then have 30 days waiver free, but they could just wait until they needed to waive somebody THEN waive and they would therefore buy themselves 30 waiver free days from that point. Doesn't make sense to me at all.
Right now we could fit Fehr on the roster without sending anybody down. It makes zero sense. You do not need the flexibility, you can simply waive when people come back.
We were kinda light on the backend in OKC, but then we signed Montgomery, but then Teubert was called up. So who knows.
I'd take the chance simply because Chorney was coming around last year. At the very least we could use him this year in OKC and then cut him loose.
Chorney had a strong camp. At worst he's a good no. 8-9 guy to have in the system.
Tulopov is on a try-out and they can always send a guy like Motin to the ECHL if absolutely necessary.
That said, the Oilers might be fine with their defensive depth right now, when Whitney is back Petry goes down. Petry, Teubert and Plante remain decent call-up options.

All three have rotated in and out of the press box. Waiving them might give them an opportunity to play elsewhere if not with the Jets.
Maxwell is good enough to play in the NHL, but has only played like 2 games since the season started.

Are depth might be fine, but I don't have 100% confidence that Whitney last all year. Also have Smid back there who isn't exactly and iron man either.

It's basically the MacLean situation again. If a team puts years of time and money into the development of a prospect, then he might as well play on their farm team instead of the farm team of a competitor, in case he ever improves.
I'd be very surprised if the Oilers don't claim Chorney back. If they are the only team to put in a claim for him, then they can assign him directly to OKC.

The Barons have been really good this year and already have too many players. Not sure the Oilers would be interested in taking up another contract spot by claiming Chorney back.
