What are you talking about? It's a Canadian arena, so they never get The Star Spangled Banner right, and I've heard much more impressive renditions of O Canada as well. That singer was mediocre, at best.

The Canadian arenas are the only place you can ever hope to hear the Star Spangled Banner sung correctly. American singers are way too self centered and determined to "make the song their own" and make (inevitably horrible) pitch and octave changes all over the place, as well as ******** cadence modifications.

Also they make it take twenty ****ing minutes. It's an old drinking song; get over yourselves.

That said, I actually think the guy the Wild have does a pretty good job. Doesn't really pull any of that.

You know, about the only place you can hear a proper rendition of the Star Spangled Banner lately is at some high school game where they have the band perform the instrumental version. You are dead on about singers in America always trying to put their own stupid flourish on the anthem and just utterly wrecking it. Singers should just sing the song without any of the weird pitch changes they all seem to like. Stop trying to jazz the thing up and just PERFORM it.

Hey I like the idea of raising a glass and singing pub style. Also, not all singers screw up the anthems, just the famous ones.

Sing it straight as best as you can, that's it. Let the crowd sing with. You're LEADING the crowd in singing the anthem, not performing for them.
