I know that Vitale took a shift with Kunitz and Dupuis near the end of the game. Hopefully they were just giving Staal a rest because we play again tomorrow.

Let's get realistic here, Niskanen is no where near Gogo. Goligoski was a 50 point Dman here. He a legit replacement for Gonchar on the PP. He was the ideal 3rd pairing Dman.
In Dallas, they are satisfied with him being their #1 Dman. At least that's what they were saying at the end of last season, as he had almost a point per game for them and played in all situations.

For the Pens, it's a win win because Niskanen emerged as a sufficient #5 Dman, and Neal is 2nd in the NHL in goals through 20% of the season.

I also don't think Dallas would be too eager to make any trade-backsies.

Caught bits and pieces. But Wow, Neal is a helluva hockey player. I also loved seeing Geno try to feed him there as time was winding down for his Hatty. If that's Ovie he's firing that as soon as it touches his tape... How did Tangradi look?

Yes, because Neal was superfluous there given the emergence of Benn. It was a win-win for both teams. That said, Neal + Niskanen > Gogo from the Pens perspective.

I think I'm bad luck for the Pens. I only saw the first period, with Dallas leading 1-0. I had things to do so I missed periods 2 and 3, where the Pens scored 3 unanswered goals to win the game.

malkin should have shot that....a hat trick like that means nothing with a feed into an empty net and devalues the actual accomplishment.

Neal still wanted the hat trick because it was against his former team. Malkin knew that and that's why he tried to get the puck to him.

Yep. Exactly right, CH. It's the right call.

To the original poster - Also when does a hat trick get looked down upon because it's an empty net? You kidding me? Nobody remembers it when the career is over. Ask me how many ENs #99 has. Ask me how many #66 has. I don't know. I'm sure they completed a few hat tricks w/ an empty netter. It's part of the game.

Always remember - the team who pulls their goalie sacrifices the easy goal for a chance to out-number the opposition. It's part of the game.

Saying a hat trick is diminished because it included an EN goal is nonsense. It's like saying a hat trick isn't a real hat trick because it wasn't a natural hat trick.

The game was won, Geno was being unselfish, and Neal wanted that last goal. It didn't happen, but whatever, no big deal.

One of the most famous Gretzky goals of his career was an empty net goal, when he scored his 50th into an empty net, giving him 50 in 39 games.

Heck, I remember a couple of seasons ago Sid lost sole ownership of the Rocket Richard trophy because Stamkos scored his 51st goal to tie Crosby into an empty net.

Empty net goals still mean something, and can often times be the difference over the course of a season of meeting a milestone and barely missing out.

Make no mistake...Gretzky, Lemieux, and Jagr used to cheat up ice for empty netters. Let's not pretend that any player is above getting them.

apparently malkin is, he actually needs to worry a little more about his own stats which are not on par with earlier in his career.

Malkin should have effectively had 3 points last night.
