About time, good news on Kapanen & Stevenson. Desjardins & Primeau out 4 while

Good news. Kapanen and Stevenson expected to be back in the end of the month. According to Hitch Kapanen is back for NJ Devils game.

Hitchcock repeated yesterday that both Stevenson (hip) and Kapanen (shoulder) are expected back before the end of November. As for Desjardins and Primeau, well, concussions are a much murkier subject.

Desjardins seems further along in his recovery than Primeau, but Hitchcock noted Desjardins "has to be [practicing] with us before he's ready."

Hitchcock said neither Desjardins nor Primeau is close to being medically cleared for full practices.

"It could be a day or a week or a month before either one of them will be ready for that," Hitchcock said. He added that neither Desjardins nor Primeau has passed neuropsychological (baseline) tests.

Desjardins being out hurts a great deal more than Primeau being out.

What do you want to bet that when Sami gets back, three more defensemen go down and he's back on the blue line again?

I'm missing something. Who is Stevenson?

They really shuffled the roster this offseason.

As soon as they had the surgery, they announced it wasn't as bad as they thought and instead of 10-12 weeks, it was 6-8 weeks.

Hitchcock said Stevenson could be back Wed. night against Pens.
If he does come back, who will Hitch sit?
Gagne - Forsberg - Knuble
Sim - Richards - Umberger
Savage - Handzus - Radio
Brashear - Carter - Sharp

I personally would sit Radio but he seems to be right up there with Forsberg and Gagne in Hitch's eyes. It looks like Umberger, Sharp, or Brashear could be the odd man out. Substitute Stevenson for Umberger and I don't see much improvement. sub for Radio and I see a great improvement.

I hope Primeau can come back soon, Handzus needs to get back on the line with Richards and Sim. Way to go Hitch, that Handzus-Savage-Radio line is really shutting down opponents.

I'd sit Brashear or Savage

Do you guys think Kapanen will play on the second- or third-line once he's healthy again? He's a small, fast, and skilled player who could really benefit from the new rules imo.

I don't know where he'll play. He might go back on a checking line because of his defensive play, but I hope not. He's got great speed and skating ability and pretty good hands, I think he'd be a nice addition to a scoring line.

Jeff Carter has played well this season and has really impressed me with the little ice time he's been getting. He's also been playing with a huge pile of useless named Donald Brashear. If Carter and Kapanen were paired up, I think they'd make a really nice duo.

I would have to say I'd be more happy with lines like this...

Gagne/Forsberg/Knuble
Handzus/Richards/Sim
Umburger/Carter/Kapanen
Radio/Sharp/Stevenson

The first two lines worked fantastic the time they were together earlier in the season. But I think giving Carter a speedy, playmaking linemake line Kapanen would be a godsend for his development.

Sharpy has proven himself before to be a capable defensive center. While not a shut-down guy by any means at all, he's capable of playing responsible. I don't know if I see the need for a "Shut Down Line" any longer in the new NHL. Altho Hitch might be slow to come to that conclusion himself. Radio is an energy player on that line and Stevenson is the physical presense. Just throwing more crap out there to see what sticks

Also, for the future, it would be great to see lines more like this.

Gagne/Forsberg/Knuble
Handzus/Richards/Sim
Umburger/Carter/Kapanen
Radio/Primeau/Stevenson

That Primeau line is as good an energy/defensive line as you get make up with the players we have.

You know Radio plays so hard every shift and kills penaltys very well, but he has to develop something more to his offensive game. Seems he skates hard and wide every time he takes the puck in offensively. Just goes full torque wide of the D and gets ridden behind the net or into the corner every time he tries to make something happen. But I guess that's just what he is, solid defensive energy forward.

Good point about not needing a shut down line in the “new NHL”. Ottawa’s shut down line of Fisher, Neill and Shaeffer are potting goals every other night. However, do we trade our defensive specialists to have 4 scoring lines or do we want those aggressive defensive type players for the playoffs when the refs could potentially put the whistles in their pockets?

Looks like FLyers will get Kapanen and Rico in one week. Kapanen in one week for sure I would rest Rico for another 10 days, do not want to risk it.
