Per Russo: Wellman's been sent back down to Houston. Does this mean Lats is expected back Thursday, or they're going to call up another D-man without putting anyone on IR?

I dunno. I don't think the plan was to play Wellman at all.

A day of NHL salary and a day of NHL per diem is a good reward for the kid who is lighting it up in Houston. I'd expect some of the same things to happen when the Aeros have a stretch of non-game, non-practice days.

Knowing how the AHL guys live, that pay probably just paid his rent in Houston for 6 months.

Could be. However, assuming Zid is out, we're sitting at 19 healthy players for tomorrow's game with 3 injured guys not on IR (Zid, Scandella, Lats). If no one's going to IR, but we need to call someone up (or take Lundin/Zanon off IR) for Zid insurance, we needed that space back.

Yeah, but we can place either Scandella or Latendresse on retro-active IR so space isn't an issue in my mind.

So who is the next call up if Lundin isn't ready?

Cuma? Bagnall?

Most likely Bagnall. But I wouldn't mind seeing Cuma given a shot.

I want Cuma! Let's see what the kid has, he is supposed to be our future. Give him a shot. What's the worst that happens, he doesn't play well we send him down and call up Bagnall?

So we call him up for one game, don't play him, then send him down again? I don't get it. Maybe the Zids injury has something to do with it though. Calling up another defensemen?

Getting a bit off topic, but considering who went down on defense, I would think Genoway would be the callup here if Zids/Zanon/Lundin/Scandella isn't available. With the way TOI has been distributed thus far, Yeo can probably hide him pretty well, and possibly have him replace Schultz on the PP.

Wellman:

Approximate AHL Salary: $85,000

NHL Salary: $850,000

He got paid his NHL salary for the day... I believe it's $8,000 for the his contract per day. All he did was practice and take part in the warm ups.

Long story short... It's a reward for the player.

Like Bozak and I were discussing, the Aeros have a lull in their schedule, so he's not missing anything in Houston. When he's called up he gets the NHL treatment for pay/per diem. It's a nice reward for how he's playing. We did a similar thing in LA/Anaheim with Kuemper. He got a nice day with the team, some NHL treatment, and got to watch the big club play from the press box.

There's also the Zid angle on it. If Zid/Lats/Scandella aren't put on IR and we need to call someone up, we need that roster space. Moving him back down gives us that extra bit of flexibility for a move.

With 3 different possible concussions I'd hope at least one of em' isn't too serious. And by hope I mean a player other than Zids. Big Bear is playing great and Scandella hasn't played too bad for an inexperienced guy either. Really, REALLY, hoping Lundin can play pretty soon. I really want to see him on the ice.

We should move the call-up discussion back to the proper thread.

What I hope for the lines to be:

Heatley-Cullen-Setoguchi
Wellman-Koivu-Bouchard
Johnson-Brodziak-Clutterbuck
Gillies-Powe-Peters/Staubitz

I dont see Stoner providing "toughness" for a while. In his post game interview last night, he talked about how much his finger hurt just stick handling the puck. He won't be throwing any hay-makers for a few months.

He doesn't ever punch with that hand, and fighting's not the only way to provide toughness.

unless he's planning on just standing there throwing punches and not grabbing the other guy's jersey there's no way he's going to fight with a busted finger.

There are other ways to provide toughness but he's limited there too. I mean, he can still shove someone off Backs or pull someone away from someone else but again stuff like that is not going to be good for the finger. Just hitting people? Yeah, he can do that.

Racking up the frequent flyer miles I see. Does that mean we had to move another player onto IR, or did we have enough room after moving Lats there? I think we had room, but don't remember.

I wonder why we recalled, reassigned, then recalled again? Odd if you ask me, but get him into a game.

My guess is that something changed with the club. It sounds like (as Bozak had hypothesized) the first call up was just a reward for good play. Gave him a day with the team, better pay and per diem, then they sent him back. With Houston having games Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I'd say he's expected to play this time. I don't think they'd have him missing games if he was going to sit in the press box.

With that said, does that mean they're dissatisfied with someone (and he's replacing them) or that someone else is hurt?

From what I can tell from Wild.com:

Heat-Koivu-Seto
Butch-Cullen-Clutter
Powe-Brodz-Johnson
Peters-Gillies-Staubitz-Wellman
(Lats on IR)

Falk-Prosser
Stoner-Fredheim
Schultz-Spurgeon
Zidlicky-Scandella
(Lundin, Zanon on IR)

Backstrom-Harding

Obviously not pairings/lines, just organizing them a bit. That's 23, so it took Lats on IR to bring up Wellman again after bringing up Fredheim.

Also I'm with Squidz on this one, I think they're going to play him this time around. You don't call up your best AHL player and still a younger prospect to have him sit around.
