The NHL has a much more comprehensive concussion protocol in place than the NFL.

Being Ranger fans and hockey fans,we know the steps from concussion recovery. Ride the bike for 15 minutes today. If everything Is status quo, increase to 30 minutes in the next day or two.

Great to hear. Hopefully no setbacks occur and he continues to progress. He is probably very out of shape right now. Gotta be optimistic and think that, barring set back, he will progress and be back this season.

A litte beckon of light possibly.

To be cleared for light physical activity would mean that he has to have been feeling good for at least a little while. Start working out lightly with no headaches and gradually keep increasing the amount that he works out. It seems he is on the Sidney Crosby plan.

I have no idea, like many of us, when to expect Staal back but hopefully he comes back some time this year so he gives us a boost in the playoffs.

Supposedly he was only feeling bad after working out, so I don't know that we really have learned anything yet since he hasn't been working out. The real test will be after he gets on the bike, and then each time after that as his workload is increased.

To the other posters: I apologize for the typo, it was beacon of light.

And GAG you're right, I need to see how he responds to gradually pushing himself more an more. Each workout is a stepping stone that if he clears it without a headache then he can move on. I'm just kind of looking at it like maybe the doctors might have saw something that signaled that he may be able to start working out without getting a headache.

That means it was a concussion, not a neck injury I was hoping for.

Rangers are hanging tough on Lundqvist. Plus Ds contribute in goals. That covers our defensive defense flaws that are not going to disappear. As soon as we play good offensive teams, the absence of Staal will resurface back to last month end problem. We may see that as soon as Sat.

2. Ice and boards are harder surfaces than grass
3. Football helmets are much better suited for head-on-head impact
I would say the biggest thing is guaranteed contracts vs. not guaranteed

Hockey players have the luxury of taking their time to get back as their money situation is set in stone. For NFL players not so much. Would make sense why guys would rush back to action, fear of losing a job will make you make tough decisions.

on his way to a full recovery, this is great news for sure. it may be wishful thinking to think he could be on the ice for the winter classic but that's what i'm hoping for. if not, with no setbacks he definitely should be around within a few weeks after that. while the concussion has obviously taken its toll on marc, i think the fact that he played the remainder of the season last year is probably a sign that it wasn't TOO severe of a concussion.

Every player has aches and pains throughout the season, and they play through it. I'm assuming that was the case with Marc. He probably didn't know how bad it was. Once he started experiencing symptoms while trying to get ready for the season, he probably knew something was seriously wrong.

January for real practices with the team/game conditioning, February for games, would be my guess.

This may have been the plan from the moment he was shut down in training camp. If so, what Dagoon was saying makes sense. Take baby steps in November, gradually increase workouts through December, real practices / conditioning in January, games in February.

If at any time he has a setback, shut him down for the whole season and try the same routine next summer to get ready for training camp.

Bacon is pretty fantastic on its own, so a bacon of light - id imagine, would be some heavenly pork. I value this as a win. Staal cleared for light workout is definitely a Bacon of Light.
