You are overstating the case. You dont play 20 minutes a night at D in the NHL by being awful defensively. He has certainly been inconsistent recently though, like most of the team, but we have also seem him play better. He is what he is, an offensive puck moving D who is sometimes inconsistent defensively but is also capable of stretches of solid defensive play.

The latest per Euroflyers:

Quote:
Gustafsson got an injection for his wrist. Will test it in training. If injection won't help, wrist gets operated. Would be out for 6 weeks.
Edit: He is still in Philadelphia (as of Saturday).

Quote:
Rookie defenseman Erik Gustafsson underwent successful wrist surgery Thursday morning, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

Gustafsson, who was originally called up from the Adirondack Phantoms for Oct. 27's game against the Winnipeg Jets, hasn't played since Nov. 6 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Flyers will continue to be without Gustafsson a while now, as the young defenseman is expected to miss six weeks rehabbing from his surgery.

Meh, not too concerned. He's only the 6th Dman. If they can't survive this they have bigger problems to worry about.

And Lilja has been playing very well lately too, which takes the pressure off having to play Gus.

Lilja seems to have his skating legs now, he's playing well on D and not creating too many turnovers. Plus he's physical too.

I also like Maguire's comments about him a few games ago, regarding his enthusiasm for the game, condition and status as a good team player.

We have a lot of kids this year, and all the vets are going out of their way to lead them in the right direction.

Yeah Lilja has been playing well recently, but even if he wasn't, it's still just the 6th Dman. If the other 5 guys can't make up for a 6th Dman playing poorly, there are bigger issues at hand. That's not to say you don't want a good 6th Dman, its just that 1/6 guys on defense isn't going to kill your team. May cost you a goal here or there, but like I said, if they can't deal with a bad sixth Dman, they are in more trouble than just having a bad sixth Dman.

Yeah, I'd rather have Gustafsson than Lilja, but it's not the biggest problem in the world. It would suck if we got another injury/illness on d though. Would we risk Walker or Bartulis on reentry, or go with someone like Marshall? Not the most appealing options either way.

Wonder who they will call up as a replacement if someone gets hurt. Walker is too expensive, and Bartulis needs to go through reentry.

I can probablly see Kessel or Marshall I guess.

i think the Flyers have used up their quota of using/calling up young defenseman so its probably Matt Walker who goes on re-entry waivers.

I wouldn't be shocked in the slightest if Walker is called up. I'd be outraged, but not shocked.

Oh, absolutely. At half his current cap rate he'd be worth something to someone.

So we should call up Kessel or Marshall.
We don't need any dead cap space

I could see him clearing. If Zherdev and Avery made it through, Walker can. Both players have low risk high reward but made it through. Walker has low risk low reward. It would suck if he was recalled and got claimed.

Luckily, I don't think we have the cap room to fit 1.7 mil.

Zherdev was never on re-entry waivers, only normal waivers

Id say they are different cases..
With Zherdev, no body wanted him really because of his work ethic..
With Avery, he is seen as someone who pulls the team down.. At least from the fans..
Think of the way Carcillo was.. Towards the end of his time here, he just wasnt as effective..

I know Zherdev and Avery are different cases, but what I was saying with the low salary they had a low risk and with the potential upside to either player there was a high reward. With Walker, yeah its a small cap hit, but he's a #6/7 defenseman and nothing more. He there is a low risk to claiming, but the reward also isn't very high. I'm not saying he WILL clear if recalled, only that I don't think it is a foregone conclusion that he would be claimed. Was he on re-entry at all last year?

I don't recall him being on it last year.. And he will probably get picked up by a team like columbus whose Defense is a joke
