I thought for sure that he was going to be suspended for that hit. Guess not.

Another huge hit, another borderline 2:00 Charging call.

Also interesting:

Stephane Auger is the referee, so just keep that in mind.

Such a bad call. Beautiful, textbook hit that couldn't possibly be any cleaner. Still disgusts me that it was called a penalty.

FTFY
And yeah, the charging calls are getting a little much.. He doesnt take too many strides and only leaves his feet after he hits the player which is legal

“I perfected the hitting game"
And as a flyers fan, how could you not like this guy? Average to undersized player playing bigger than his size.. Solid in his own zone.. And keeps shelley out of the lineup

Ehhhh I wouldn't call him solid defensively. He is really good at hitting though.

edit: To clarify, he hasn't been terrible though. One thing I've noticed is that on defense he closes the distance between himself and the puck carrier quickly, and even when he's going in for the hit he keeps his stick on the ice for as long as he can. He really rushes and hassles them.

hes a perfect mix between dan carcillo and jody shelley, carcillo always skated as hard as possible as does rinaldo but instead of being a goon, zac decides to just lay people out jody shelley style

Using players who've played in 10+ games:

1st in NHL in 5v5 penalties drawn per 60 with 6.3 (2nd is Jeff Skinner-- 3.7)

1st in NHL in 5v5 penalties taken per 60 with 4.7 (2nd is Brad Staubitz-- 4.2)

14th in NHL in 5v5 +/- drawn/taken per 60 with a +1.6 (Couturier is 5th-- +2.0)

I ****ing LOVE this kid. You can tell Rinaldo understands his place and role and doesn't take for granted that he's playing in the NHL. He hits like an 18-wheeler -- it's a shame refs are dumb and have already called him for penalties twice this season on two perfectly legal, bone-crushing checks -- and has some serious wheels. He'll fight anyone, regardless of size, and doesn't back down ever. Rinaldo is perfect for this city.

I would hate to see how they would have treated Roenick in today's league with these joke refs as rookie. Guy leaves his feet on the follow through of a freakin legal check. No different than when he leveled Doughty...

Hard-hitting Rinaldo brings big game to Flyers

Pretty good article on Zac attack

Quote:
Unlike Dan Carcillo, who often took bad penalties for similar actions and earned himself a spot in Laviolettes doghouse, thats not the case with Rinaldo.

I think Zac has played an extremely clean game since hes been here, Laviolette said. The physicality in what he does has been excellent. I like Zac because hes a positive person in the room and out on the ice he brings a lot of positive energy to our group.

Hes played a good game. Hes been more than just be physical and looking for hits. Hes able to contribute solid D-zone play. Hes contributed on offense. Hes made plays.

Hes been a real positive addition for us. If discipline comes into play for selfless actions, they get looked after, but I dont think thats the case here.

But what if the officials keep whistling Rinaldo for clean checks? At this rate, he will finish with 406 penalty minutes this season.

Im not changing, Rinaldo said. If I change, Ive changed for the better. I havent stopped hitting or fighting and Ive put more skill into my game. Ive just been getting better and better.

hit of the week, if this was Rinaldo it would have been a penalty and maybe a trip to visit Shanny.

i sure feel bad for this kid, Rinaldo seems destined to follow down the road Carcillo paved here in Philly.

Shame refs give out reputation type calls... that is the only thing against rinaldo.

It sucks for Rinaldo himself, because he is trying. He hasn't deserved the rep calls based on this season, but it takes more than 6 weeks to shake a reputation.

However, when you're officials (and the AHL and NHL work with each other), you're less willing to take that chance. Like I said, Rinaldo is trying, but that's the web you weave. It might be unfair that he referees have railed him so hard on his reputation, but there's a reason he has a reputation to start with.

And it's up to the GM and coach to recognize that, instead of passing the buck and saying "well, we like how he's played, and we don't know why this is happening," they know why, and just refuse to acknowledge that, which is why you don't use the NHL to shake it.

The "I won't do anything different" didn't help Carcillo when he did the same thing. It's up to the players to civilly discuss it with the officials instead of crying about it in the media. That's often counterproductive. Even though he's gotten tough calls, he's basically broken even drawing them. Going to the press about it won't help your case, especially when you're the one who is on double secret probation.

As for the misconduct he got in the last game, he had to be separated at least twice, maybe three times, and in a tie game in the third period, starting **** after the whistle for no reason won't do you any favors. It would have been his last shift of the game anyways. Learning experience.
