You're supposed to say, "Brilliant idea Bryzgalovsky, why the hell didn't I think of that?"

Did you see him on the play when Meszaros got a little overzealous and coughed up the puck? Couturier lined up and skated backwards right along with the player who had the puck and stole it from him like he's been a defenseman his whole life.

A one time thing..
He is a great defensive forward but he is not a defenseman..
From what ive seen in the nhl, you usually do it the reverse way.. Taking a defenseman to forward role.. Cant recall seeing the way you are saying though
Just for a few games when Schenn comes back and Gustaffson is still out.
Couturier > Lilja
(I don't want to see Harrison Zolnierczyk or Zac Rinaldo sent down.)
I actually had a somewhat similar thought when Couturier covered for a pinching Meszaros, but I was only thinking Couturier would also have been a great defenseman, not to actually play him as one.
If we're down a dman in a game, I wouldn't be too opposed to this idea actually. Either Couturier or Read, perhaps.
I wouldn't do it just to bench Lilja though. I doubt that Couturier would be a better dman than him right now, Lilja has actually been pretty solid lately. If we have another injury and the choices are Marshall/Kessel/Lauridsen or reentry Walker/Bartulis... then maybe we should try something out. Or just go with 5 dmen but have an extra forward (Rinaldo will be out 15-20 minutes per game just by giving a funny look to someone in crowd anyway).
I really question what Laviolette and company are doing with Couturier. We all know that when Laviolette's "boy", Schenn, comes back into the lineup Couturier's ice time is going to get cut even further. Everyone talks about wanting to limit his ice time over the course of the regular season, but with it being so early in the year, now is the time to give Couturier ice time and then when the second half rolls around, roll back a bit on the ice time to avoid hitting the wall. The guy has proven so far he can play in the big league, so why not give him more than just table scraps for ice time? As well, some decent line mates might go a long way as well.
