Suter's agent gave the usual speak to Cooper, but I did find the Suter quote a little interesting:

Quote:
“We’re just talking, trying to figure everything out and that we’re on the same page,” Suter said. “I want to be here, that’s the big thing and they want me here, and it’s going to get done.”

No... I'm saying that now we have Trotz saying it and Bob McKenzie, a very reliable NHL insider, reiterating...

Absolutely!
No weasel words there. So what a reasonable person (I.e., someone who is not a 'Weber has always wanted to play for the Canucks" conspiracist) would mean interpret this to mean Suter has directed his agent as follows:
1) Use your experience to get the best deal possible for me but:
2) I want to stay here.
3) If you have any questions, see # 2.

Now if I could just get the idiots on the Rangers board to acknowledge that!

Just wanted to pop in here. I didn't like Nashville all that much as a whole for the two years that I lived there, having just moved in July. However, I am really missing going to Predators games right now. Luckily, I'll get to go to one in January when I'll be in town for a couple of days... ironically against the Hurricanes.

Been watching some games on GCL. The team looks good thus far. Craig Smith is very impressive. He just looks like he has that extra level. Actually, though, the guy I've been most impressed with is Wilson. Not particularly surprised. Anyone who follows the Predators shouldn't be. But I am impressed.

Didn't Weber say Number 2 too?

Weber is still here. I mean, I get the pessimism and it's fine, but until Weber leaves I don't think it's relevant to say "didn't Weber also say he wanted to stay here?" I think we all were under the impression that he would be more willing to sign if the owners showed they are committed to winning. Locking up Rinne long term is one step. If they lock of Suter long term it's another HUGE step. From what we hear, the team will be a cap team going forward. I think all signs point to the owners showing their cards here. Personally, I'm optimistic that Weber signs in early 2012

consider it negative mojo... besides... its a fair point that Weber did say the exact same thing... all im saying is I hope there is far less drama with Suter than we had with Weber this summer..

Fair enough. I'm not trying to keep anyone from being negative. Just giving my own opinion is all

The good news is how well we're playing during Suter's negotiations. Hopefully that will continue. It can't do anything but make Suter feel comfortable in staying.

Obviously a lot can happen between now and playoff time, but right now, this team definitely has the feel of one that can go deep into the playoffs.

Jeff Carter supposedly wants out of CBJ

It's intriguing... but his contract is a b****. Even still, it has some appeal.

Lindback + Ellis?

But, I seriously doubt CBJ would want to trade with us.

I hope Suter stays, but I am worried we will overpay. I love his game, but he is no Scott Niedermayer or Nick Lidstrom.

Hard to say. I was thinking perhaps a trade for Carter would be something worth looking at, but then we have to work out a deal for a top line center with a division rival. They desperately need a rebuild. Maybe futures work for them. I'm wary about giving up Lindback since we don't really have a back up that is nearly as good as him, but if Rinne is going to carry 70 games per year perhaps we can afford to bring up Pickard.

if the price is right, we absolutely must go after Carter. Contract be damned. The owners seem to be committed to spending to the cap, so salary should no longer matter. Cap hit is not too bad.

You have to keep in mind the times when Lidstrom and Nieder signed their deals. The cap has increased dramatically, and Lidstrom's last deal was signed at a time when he was pretty old. Suter @ 7m isn't necessarily a big deal. Now, if the team does not have the cash it definitely puts a strain on things, but in a vacuum the players you mentioned and their respective contracts should not matter a lot. Weber's deal and Doughty's deal represent the new ceiling

Normally, I would agree. But Columbus is so bad that they might consider it. It's not like Carter or Nash is going to come back and haunt them in future games any more than their opponent's current rosters are.

So are there any amusing stories about team-mates teasing Smith in the local press?

Not that I've seen, but with a game tomorrow I'm sure something will surface if there is anything out there.
