Gionta has been our best scorer over the last 2 years and you're complaining about assists? There are enough guys who can pass the puck on this team. We need more Giontas. Guys who shoot the puck and can score. Don't forget he played an entire season with Gomez who's a black hole.
Yeah, he played an entire season with Gomez and got 29 goals in 62 games. Such a terrible year for him.
Gio is a goal scorer. Gainey got him and Gomer, so Gomer can feed him the puck and he can shoot it in the back of the net.
1. Gomez hasn't passed the puck to Gionta.
2. Gionta is playing with many different linemates.
3. He shoots the puck, because good things happen when you shoot the puck.
(As long as he is scoring 25+ goals per season im totally fine if he only gets 15 or 17 assists per season)
4. He has more assists then goals this season thus far.
AND
Hes part of the handful of players on this roster that play with true heart night in night out.
While I'm hardly a gionta fan, at least he gives us added value as a leader and captain. While I don't see him being traded, I also don't expect to see him being re-signed
He's good, not great. I don't think anyone had any aspersions that this was going to be the 50-goal Gionta at all. He's clearly a top-six forward, put up 20+ goals for the last 8 years, so he's a useful part of any team anyday.
And he's the second best goal scorer after Cammalleri on the club, so I'd say he has definitely been useful and far less deserving of criticism than Gomez.

The guy was never known as a passer. He's a great skater, good shooter, and a tireless worker. He's a goal scorer and if you look at the numbers, he's been doing his job better than any of the other snipers since he joined the organization.
If you are going to slam gio, then its only fair to slam cammalleri who also gets paid to put the puck in the net. But like I said, Gio has been the better goal scorer despite not getting to play with plekanec very much relative to cammy

hahahah your are correct some of these guys are crazy, the guy has been the habs best goal scorer the last 2 years which is what he was brought in for goals. He has had a slow start this year cause he's been playing hurt. I've been fustrated a bit with him this year myself but he's starting to show signs of coming out of it, he's up to 5 goals now good for 3rd on the team

Also, gionta had a very slow start last year but cranked it up to 29 goals by year's end. Its nothing unusual.
Gionta is a true warrior and a testament to what you can accomplish if you apply yourself despite adversities. He's the smallest guy in the NHL and plays like he's the biggest. He pops in 20 goals a year and is an absolute workhorse.
This is wrong. Real reason, excellent powerplay unit the year after the lockout were there was a bajillion powerplays. Interestingly, Gionta is a 30+ goals per 82 games player each season with Gomez since the lockout ( 2 in NJ, 2 in Mtl) but a 20+ goal guy without him (other 2 NJ years). This is reflected by his shot rate too, so probably isn't a luck thing either.
Observations by the original poster are relevent this year since Gionta seems to have lost a step, most probably (hopefully?) just temporary, but at the same time, I fully understand why he gets a pass from most, including from me. He's a warrior, nobody's ever going to question his commitment to his team and his teamates. Is he lacking talent? Probably not the purest top-6 and it's a bit more magnified considering the age, which will eventually catch up to him, if only slightly at the bigining.
But he still brings so much by being a balancing presence on and off the ice for the younger and/or less consistant players on this team that there is no reason to hit the panic button in his case. What I could see happening is him progressively finding his way further down the depth chart for the next couple years of contract while having a reduced role on the PP. But he's going to do it without whining and with the same level of hustle because he's a true team guy, a glue type of personality.
And I'm going to add that I don't mind him becoming a 30-40pts guy for us on the 3rd line, he'd still be quite usefull, nothing that compares to the albatros Gomez' contract has become.
I love Gio. Best hands on the team, and usually clutch in PO. He does what so few Habs players do. Look at his rob the D blind wraparound in 1 second goal against the Yotes. NO one does that on the Habs except him. Love the Guy. A real player, and nose for the net.
And he's been hurt all year BTW, and never complains.
You complain that he scores too much and not enough assists, really??? How is that bad?I mean it would be nice if he was a 30-30 point player, but I'll take a 30-15 player over a 20-25 point anyday of the week and twice on thursdays!
Only in Montreal can we complain that a guy scores too much. Hahaha
