Watching tonight's game makes me think this thread is ridiculous. I can't remember a Rangers team with this many sub 20 shot games. It's ridiculous.

They had one good winning streak and the rest has been a mess night in and night out. There's still no indication as to which one is real.

I think the Rangers have one of the worst shots for/shots against differentials in the league. Scott Cullen did a piece on it the other day for TSN.

Yeah I know, but they were getting better (except the 2nd Ottawa game) and I was willing to overlook it, but this game makes me wonder if this is the same team we saw to start the season. Those Jagr teams constantly dominated in shots on goal for and against. The Rangers have had like 6 games this year with fewer than 20 shots in 17 games. They barely ever got that few in previous seasons.

Straka and Nylander really complimented Jagr that year so its hard to compare, we also had a good system with good bottom 2 lines. Im not saying what we have this year cant be better as i do like some of the depth in the Avery and Deveaux line as well as the blanced scoring with 2 lines and good D and goalie, all good things but the competetion may be harder this year with the likes of Philly, Pitt, Bos, Wash and even Tor(who have some good things going) so its not going to be easy but even to get to the playoffs with how competetive it is, but the team is not bad esp if Richards can improve his play.

We won't know this till playoff time. If they get past the 2nd round sure I guess we can say that. In the end isn't that what really matters?

I must say, I am enjoying all the baloney in this thread from people that believe they know how good this team actually is. This is a team that sputtered out of the gate due to a wild travel schedule, and then went on a winning streak against mediocre to bad teams.

How can anyone make a legitimate comparison to teams of the last 6 years based on that information?

Totally agreel!!
Looking at our 10-4-3 record now is one thing. I want to see what we look like after these next 20 games (in 40 days!) are played:

Nov 23 @FLA
Nov 25 @WAS
Nov 26 PHI
Nov 29 PIT
Dec 1 @CAR
Dec 3 @TB
Dec 5 TOR
Dec 8 TB
Dec 10 @BUF
Dec 11 FLA
Dec 13 DAL
Dec 15 @STL
Dec 17 @PHO
Dec 20 @NJ
Dec 22 NYI
Dec 23 PHI
Dec 26 NYI
Dec 28 @WAS
Dec 30 @FLA
Jan 2 @PHI

Need to play .500 hockey or better here. Schedule gets even tougher twds the end of the year as well...

Not even close in my opinion. Best team since the lock-out was the 06-07 Rangers.

We were one player away (legitimate puck moving / PPQB defense man) from making a Stanley Cup run. We were that one player away edging out the Sabres and going onto the Conference finals.

That, and Straka-Nylander-Jagr was one of the top-3 lines in the NHL (in fact, the only line that might have been better than it was the Heatley-Spezza-Alfredsson line).

Straka Nylander Jagr. Was the best line in hockey. They simply Dominated. Had Jagr not got injured.... Who knows.
That team also had absolutely NO depth and wasn't all that great on defense.

talentwise, on paper, I would say the only team that gives this one a run for its money is when we lost to Buffalo in the playoffs. Jagr, Straka, Nylander, Shanahan, Avery, Cullen, Prucha, etc. were pretty good. If Cally and Dubinsky could've just cracked the lineup a little sooner and taken guys like Jason Ward and Marcel Hossa's roster spot.

How's Avery looking my Ranger friends? I've heard there has been a huge turn around since he got here. Is that because of him, or he's just part of it?

However I don't think it's a stretch to say that Gabby and Richards would be the 2nd and 3rd best players on that team. I also think we have more forward depth and definitely a better defense even w/o Staal.
In terms of going deep in the PO's, absolutely. And its not too early to tell. Like there is no way you can take a fragile team heavily lead by 35 y/o's deep into the PO's.

But I am not sure if its the team being closes to making a cup run that we have seen. I think our team in 05' had some really weak side and some really strong sides. If that team had been properly complimented -- they could have made a run in 06'. But Slats made some misstakes there for sure. Or what do I know, maybe the right type of players weren't available.

The core has gotten better with experience so the team has gotten better.
Curious to see what you mean here. Perhaps Richards and Gaborik are on par with the skill that Straka-Nylander-Jagr showed (but probably not, to be honest). But considering just how dominant that first line was a few years ago, I find it difficult to say this team is "more skilled"

I think they are deeper, for sure, but I dont think this current squad is overly skilled.
