If you look at the microstats he looks even better. I'm hoping the Habs re-sign him but I don't know what kind of contract to expect. Anything from 3-4.75 million is what I'm expecting.

4.75 would be huge. A big reason why Gorges is valuable and possibly undervalued is precisely because he is cheap. If he made that much, he would not be as interesting.

Even very good defensemen don't make bank unless they have some kind of flash to their game like high point totals or physical play. I doubt Gorges gets more than 4 million a season.

Scuderi was signed to a deal worth $3.4m two years ago. Gorges is comparable in the non-flash department, but is superior to Scuderi in virtually every other way. I could see him make more than $4m.

Scuderi left his current team though. There is typically an inflationary effect when a player goes to the highest bidder than resigns with his current one, for obvious economic reasons.

I look at what Kronwall got -more flash with hitting and more offense of late but the minutes Gorges plays are tougher tougher. Or what Hannan got and I can definitely see 4.75 from a team other than the Habs.

I think 3.75-4.0 is the most likely range but I can see more extreme situations further away. Signing another free agent to replace Gorges would probably cost about $4 million if you're looking at a guy capable of playing well in similar even-strength situations.

Lets not drag our heels with this guy and risk losing him for nothing on July 1st. He is much to valuable to let walk away.

We all loved Frankie Bouillon at 600k, but he was the never-ending butt of jokes at 1.9M.

Josh Gorges is far superior, of course, but just saying that if he gets above 4M, knowing the fanbase, they aren't going to be too happy and he moves from underrated to overrated pretty fast.

Yup...

longer the team waits to extend him, the more expensive he's going to be (barring another major injury of course).

We don't know how hard the team tried to sign him for longer than 1 year this past offseason, but IF (and please understand the meaning of the word "IF" before accusing me of bashing management) PG is the one that favored the 1 year deal (either by only offering a year, or by lowballing the 2+ year offers), then he made a MAJOR mistake.

in fact, anything short of Gorges himself refusing to consider more than 1-year (which may have been the case, even if that seems unlikely), would have to be considered a blunder on the habs part.

I really, REALLY hope we can extend him at <4M$, but if he decides to test the market, don't be shocked if some team (Edmonton comes quickly to mind), decides his play & his intangibles are worth 4-4.5M$ even if he's not a big point getter.

hope we see him as a pillar of our defense for years to come

Let's continue this discussion boys! I think Gorges can be re-signed to a four-year deal worth $4 million/year. He's now a top-4 defenseman for the Habs even when Markov and Spacek come back.

Probably a good read for fans of other teams, but I think every Habs fan already knows what this guy brings every night.

I like to refer to Gorges game as heart and smarts. He's also more mobile than advertised.

Hasn't been underrated for a while. And for good reason. Plays physical, good first pass, solid positioning, occasional brain cramp and good leadership. I'd be pissed if he got more than 3.5mil but I want him on the team for at least 5 years.

Kronwall brings more than Gorges, and Hannan was making 4.5 but that is precisely my point, he was overpaid and a lot less valuable at that price. So if Gorges, gets that much, he'll just fall into that category, and out of the ''good value'' one.

Gorges sucks! He is small, non-physical defenceman with no offensive tools. 2 million player at most.

But then again I'm only saying this to try and hold down the hype train, so we could sign him cheaper and longer term. I love Gorges, I hope stays a Hab forever.
