Buffalo - Carolina

To

C/W Tuomo Ruutu ($3.8M UFA)
D Bryan Allen ($2.9M UFA)

Sabres gain a capable #2 centreman in Ruutu who also has some grit. Buffalo also gets a big, physical vet d-man in Allen to play on the 3rd pairing. Both are on expiring contracts.

Vanek-Roy-Pominville
Leino-Ruutu-Stafford
Ennis-Adam-Hecht
Gerbe-Gaustad-Tropp
X. McCormick, Kaleta

Myers-Regehr
Ehrhoff-Weber
Sekera-Allen
X. Grags

To

RW/C Brad Boyes ($4M UFA)
D Jordan Leopold ($3M)
2012 2nd RND pick [CGY]

Canes get a 2nd line RW in Boyes (Could be a 1st liner - Boyes >/= LaRose), a solid vet PMD to play in their top 4 & a good 2nd RND pick.

Skinner-Staal-LaRose
Pony-Sutter-Boyes
Tlusty-Jokinen-Dwyer
Sutter-Brent-Stewart
X. Dalpe, Boychuk

Pitkanin-Gleason
Harrison-Leopold
McBain-Kaberle
X. Josi, Faulk

Thoughts from Pegulaville? In addition to the physical upgrades this deal would bring, the UFA contracts give us some flexibility in the off-season as well (to sign Ennis, etc...)

Workable...how well is Allen playing for the Canes? Leopold has been doing good lately, from what I've seen.

Carolina says no. They're not giving Ruutu to Buffalo.

Ruutu is a makeshift center, not a true one (he's playing LW now for the Canes and only plays there in emergency). And I don't want to trade our most consistent defenseman (Leopold). Value wise I think it is slightly in Carolina's favor as well. Regardless, as I posted in the other trade thread involving Ruutu, Carolina is simply not trading him right now.

I'd rather keep Boyes/Leopold/2nd.

Ruutu's a winger, not a center. It does not solve any issue for the Sabres in the middle.

Allen, he's an asset who if available would be a great mid-pairing acquisition to allow the team to get more balance on their back end.

As for what the offer is... there is no reason for Carolina to move either guy. They have puckmovers in Kaberle, McBain, Pitkanen, and Faulk. They don't have a need for a guy like Leopold. And they are painfully weak on the right side which is why their fans have such a hate right now for LaRose since he's getting minutes in the top 6 that his talent simply does not match. It does not look like a fit for both guys combined. Maybe simplify it down to just one or the other, rather than both.

according to hockeydb.com & a couple other sources he is a centreman over a winger - He was their #2 centre this year behind Staal until LaRose decided to crap out & they moved Ruutu into the RW slot for more offense.

And Brad Boyes was a center for us down the stretch, it was out of necessity not because it's his natural position. Same case for Carolina last year, Ruutu is a winger.

And hockeydb.com used to list Al Kotalik as a 165lbs center too. That didn't make it true.

Yep. Ruutu to center is much closer to Boyes at center than a full-time pivot.

Afaik Jokinen has been basically their #2 center the whole season. He was the center on that Skinner-Jokinen-Ruutu line the few games I've watched the Canes.
