Cally may be up there in defensive ability with those guys, but he has no where near the talent on offense as Datsyuk or Kesler for sure, and MAYBE hes close to Staal.

I'd say Cally is even with. J. Staal in pure offensive production, assuming Staal continues his performance from last year. They were on pace for the same amount of points last season, both missing time to injury. I can definitely see Cally picking up 60 if he doesn't miss significant time. Maybe more if they keep him with Richards.

Richards could give Callahan the numbers he needs to compete for it

Stepan most likely in the future imo

Stepan isn't that great defensively.

He's not bad defensively, but I doubt he's ever known for his defense.

Tortorella has played Stepan over Anisimov on the penalty kill for much of this season. That says a lot about Stepan's defensive abilities.

No one has even mentioned Toews in here. I think he'd be on the list to receive a Selke before anyone we have. Callahan, Dubinsky, Anisimov and Stepan are the closest we have at this point in time.

Anisimov is far and away better ES though.

That's what I think of when I think Selke. PK should have some bearing, but I also think how good they are defensively ES (see: Datsyuk.)

Through 20 games, Stepan has about 1 minute more on the PK than Arty. I don't think one is being favored over the other at all.

Still. Freakin' Pavel Datsyuk.
Pavel Datsyuk is to take aways
as
Ryan Callahan is to blocked shots

but it's the "take away"s ability (+ Datsyuk's speed and offensive abilities) that make him so dangerous. If Callahan was able to translate his blocked shots into scoring opportunities like Datsyuk does with his take aways, it'd be a entirely different conversion. But, yeah... Selke should be referred to as the "2-way player award" instead of defensive forward award.

no

we have palyers that are cut form the right mold, however, none of them are really the caliber of player that gets recognized on that level

if callahan explodes then its possible, but unlikely imo

Doesn't mean he's a good/great defensive player.

People often confuse being good on the penalty kill and being a good defensive player. They are actually two different things. I'm a firm believer that you can stick any player with common sense and 100% effort on the PK and often get a good result even if he doesn't have the greatest hockey sense.

And no, we have no Selke caliber forwards. Callahan is the only one that comes close but his offense isn't nearly sufficient enough to warrant a spot over Datsyuk and the like.
