I love how some people think the Hawks will start trading core players now that they have their core locked up for the next 4 years at minimum and are in no cap trouble at all..
This means Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Bolland, Keith, Seabrook, Leddy and Crawford will not be traded unless the deal is too good to refuse..
Assuming their teams will not be in the playoff hunt, I expect one of these dmen to be on the Hawks for the playoffs:
-Gleason
-Kuba
-Beauchemin
Chicago needs one tough dman and/or someone with size that can kill penalties and shutdown minutes. Doesn't have to be a marquee dman, someone that can play #3-5 in the depth chart. They have lots in the 5-8 slot, but are missing a 3-5 guy.
The Hawks have the money and assets to take on an expiring contract if the ask price is reasonable.
The rest of the money they have will be on a top 6 forward. A 3-4 dman and a top 6 forward would make this a scary team to play against in the playoffs.
Just a name to toss out there for discussion - John-Michael Liles?
He's been a solid contributor to the Leafs this season and I'd like to re-sign him but there is probably going to be one of our defenseman traded to make room. He's also a UFA at year's end.
Do you guys need a defensive defenseman or an offensive one to replace Campbell?

Definitely not a Campbel type Dman. We have no problem moving the puck up ice.

We need a tough, PK, defensive Dman.
Ah. I don't think the Leafs can help with this one, we only have Komisarek, Schenn and Gunnarsson who kind of fit that mold. And while Komisarek was playing well before his injury I doubt he's who you're after with his cap hit and for your #5 spot. Schenn will probably be too costly and Gunnarsson has been solid but is a great fit with Phaneuf.

Well, I love how some people think they can grab a MARQUEE d-man with little return.
Originally, that bit about Weber/Suter was a separate thread that got merged into this one.
The source given at the start of the thread doesn't actually use the word "marquee"
Quote:
GM Stan Bowman will spend by dealing for a blueliner.
Which is good, since the Hawks really shouldn't be seeking a "marquee" defenseman anyway. We would probably be much better off both now and in the future with just "solid, yet underappreciated"
Ottawa will give you Filip Kuba for your 1st round pick next year.

Exhibit A as to how hockey doesn't matter on ESPN:
Last night an ESPN program was discussing how the Detroit Pistons needed a hero citing the heroes on the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and no mention of the Detroit Red Wings. All this despite the Red Wings probably being the most succesful team in Detroit right now.

Overpaid offenside dman for a 1st rounder? I feel that the Hawks could use their 1st with prospects to get someone less fragile with more snarl to their game (what they need) than Kuba.
