New lines at practice with injured guys coming back

At practice:

Line combos appear to be:
Vanek-Hecht-Pominville
Gerbe-Roy-Kassian
Leino-Adam-Stafford (with Ennis taking turns)
Ellis-Gaustad-Kaleta

Defense pairs aren't as set but seem to be:
Regehr-McNabb
Ehrhoff-Gragnani
Leopold-Sekera

---The injured Robyn Regehr, Drew Stafford and Patrick Kaleta are all back and appear to be taking part in practice fully. The same goes for Tyler Ennis, who is clearly getting close to returning from his high ankle sprain.

Good to hear

I'd rather have Tropp than Kassian up. I just bumped the Tropp thread, but it's clear that this roster is ridiculously crowded right now. Ennis, McCormick, and Boyes have yet to return and Tropp has already been relegated to the farm (presumably).

I feel a slow shift in culture is necessary. Now would be a good time to make a move.

Intrigued by Regehr-McNabb, however.

Only way I like Regehr/McNabb is if Ehrhoff/Leo/Reggie keep getting the tough matchups.

Don't like Hecht with Vanek and Pommer....would prefer Adam or Roy....only real surprise is McNabb Regehr

I hope Ruff isn't going to throw McNabb to the wolves like he did with Weber. However I do like the idea of keeping the rookies separate to minimize the chances of catastrophic mistakes. I'd probably try:

Regehr-Sekera
Leopold-McNabb
Gragnani-Ehrhoff

I'd love to see Sekera getting those tough minutes the way he's playing. Grags/McNabb can be flipped, haven't decided who would be better.

They'd also be slow as hell, with very limited puck movement skills.

Not a fan tbh.

McNabb was a talented puck-mover in juniors. Haven't seen an AHL game this year, but doubtful that he's forgotten that.

In what I've seen this year, he still slings it around back there. The issue is more decision making and footspeed, things to work on with experience.

I like those D-pairs more. Perhaps getting to practice with a childhood hero was Ruff throwing McNabb a bone. Kassian with two smurfs reminds me of the beginning of last year in Windsor. Granted, Roy and Gerbe are a lot better than Eric Locke and Zack MacQueen.

agreed, I imagine McNabb coming from Western Canada, that he was indeed a big Regehr fan.

Grags-Ehrhoff will get the lion's share of the offensive zone starts.

Regehr-Leopold will get the lion's share of the defensive zone starts.

Sekera-McNabb will get a bit of both.

I thought Matt Ellis' time in the NHL would've ended three seasons ago. I don't dislike the guy but the Sabres can do better.

Matt isn't going to impress anyone but you need that hard working low salary player on your 4th line.

I was hoping they'd keep chewy up, I feel he can be a better version of Matt Ellis.

Personally I'd rather they play Tropp over Ellis so long as the center situation is healthy, as Ellis plays there when necessary. But due to asset management, I understand keeping Ellis up over Tropp and otherwise am not really upset about it. Tropp has proven he has a future with the team and perhaps will factor into their decision on retaining Kaleta in the offseason.

Nah, to do that you need to get rid of the word "ES"

The guy REFUSES to shoot on the PP. He's worse than Roy.
