According to Al Strachan on CBC's Sattelite Hotstove, The Flames had offered Berard a better deal than the one he accepted in Chicagao. It sounds like the deal was contingent on Sutter being able to trade a defenseman. I guess he wasn't able to get what he wanted. Could the Gautier rumours have been true, or was it another defenseman?
If Sutter was trying to move a defenseman, then my guess is that it was indeed Denis Gauthier. However, if that was the case, it's hard to believe Sutter couldn't get a deal done. You would think there would be quite a bit of interest in Gauthier. Perhaps Sutter wanted too much in any potential deals.
