But those players aren't available--or at least aren't being actively shopped.

If Schenn ends up with Ryan's average career to date--30 goals, 60 points--that would be great. Ryan has the potential to be better--in an area, wing, where we are not as strong as center (Roo, Briere, Couturier).

When healthy this year:

Hartnell-Roo-Jagr
JVR-Briere-Ryan
Simmonds-Talbot-Read
Goon-Couturier-Harry Z (etc.)

Cap is an issue this year, and maybe its unworkable. Next year, Jagr moves on, Ryan moves up, and your boy Read can bask in the glow of second line minutes

Edit: See, I forgot Voracek, and the line-up still looks pretty good to me!

Schenn (? Capgeek still has 3.1--but I though his cap hit dropped)
Voracek (2.2)
Carle (3.4) (best case) or Mez (4.0) (more likely)

for

Ryan (5.1)
Sbisa (2.1)

There are a lot of players off to slow starts this season (Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, etc.) who may be getting misused, and apparently Ryan is as well. We know what their capabilities are because we've seen what they can do, and justify improvement because of their youth or additions of teammates/etc.

Also back to your original questions of how Ryan and Read stack up, another point to ponder is that Ryan is 1 year younger and has 3.5 more seasons than Read under his belt already.
Once again, I'm not trying to knock down Ryan's production level (roughly 35 goals, 30 assists per year so far). I just want to look at Ryan and Read in more absolute terms. This is somewhat difficult with Read, but I think we can both agree that he is a far more efficient asset than Ryan. And when acquiring Ryan, you have to consider the cost to the Flyers when they knock down the value of one of their most efficient roster assets.

Also, I don't know of any evidence that Ryan is being "misused" right now. He is slightly banged up and the season is very young. If he had a few more points right now, everything would be right in line with his usual numbers.

As far as the age/experience thing goes, both players should be pretty close to their peak territory on the curve.

Earlier I was against including Schenn as the centerpiece in a deal for Ryan, but **** it.

If it means him not going to the Rags, just don't pull the trigger Homer I want you to squeeze that trigger.

I don't think JVR can even be traded because he's injured right?

If we do trade Schenn for Ryan, then that pretty much means it was Mike Richards for Simmonds, a 2nd and Bobby Ryan.

See, that's the lack of efficiency I was talking about!

I guess that's where you got the idea to turn around and put Voracek in the deal.

Voracek + Schenn = Mike Richards trade value

Mike Richards is a more valuable trade chip than Bobby Ryan. He puts up similar point totals, has a better team contract and is a much more complete 200' player.

IDK that Voracek +3rd = Simmonds + 2nd, but even if it is, who cares? Richards is gone. We aren't talking about trading Richards for Ryan. We're talking about whether its worth trading an excellent prospect who has proven little in the NHL for an established 24 year old, 1st line winger.

I look at Schenn/8th overall (Couturier) and Voracek/Simmonds as basically interchangeable parts in the Richards/Carter deals, since both deals were so similar in structure.

The reason I care is because recent deals gives us a baseline for player trade values.

Would you have traded Mike Richards for Bobby Ryan this summer? The value doesn't make sense. I don't think you're giving Schenn his due as a valuable asset, and you're ignoring the ramifications of adding Ryan to the roster and his cap hit to the payroll structure while losing Schenn.

It would be amazing if he can get him for Voracek+Hartnell and a 2nd or something around that. That's not two bad players going the other way. Both are definitely 50-60 point players. People think that its a bad deal but they have value, and probably more than we think.

They have value, but no where near Ryan's value.
