What positives out weigh the negatives in calling up Walker? Remember, the positives need to outweigh the negatives for this to be positive for Holmgrem and for the team.
The only thing I can think of is that the asking price for a D-man was way to high. Not too many teams are offering up players right now because it's still early in the season. We can't carry only 6 dmen this month sice 10 of our 13 games are on the road. Not that I am saying this is a good move or anything I just see the reasoning behind it

We just couldnt let him rot in the minors could we. Someone picks him up at half price we are even more screwed with the cap. I dont care if he sucks. losing 850k in cap space when we constantly play it right to the cap will hurt more then anything. What happens when we get everyone back healthy and someone has claimed Walker?
We have to send someone down that we can use or trade someone and a 2nd for future consiterations.
There is nothing good about this move at all.

This really is only acceptable if Walker was really, really going to make that much of a difference for our D. He's not that much better than Marshall and Bourdon. Too big a risk for very little payoff.

I hope someone picks him up with the intention of screwing us over cap wise. Then we can get another Holmgren saying

We could have tried to pick up Teemu Laakso on waivers. He's not a great dman, but neither is Walker. Granted, Holmgren might not have known Laakso would be on waivers when he decided to recall Walker, and some other team might snag him before us.

We would be back to 50 contracts if we went that route, but we'd at least not be paying 850k for someone to not play for us.

Didnt Homer himself state that there are more teams looking for defenders than trading them? That alone increases the chances that Walker is taken. He may suck, but for 800k or so, I can see a team taking him as an injury replacement and then waive him later on.

I think we should all wait until he is picked up or clears. No use in freaking out if he makes it through tomorrow.

It doesn't matter if he clears or not, it's still an incredibly stupid and unnecessary risk to take. Lots of teams need defensive help, offering up a free defenseman at half price is a stupid thing to do right now.

Our only hope is that other teams think Walker is so terrible that he isn't worth 850k.

I bet he gets claimed. He is under contract next year too, correct? If so, we would be stuck for half the cap hit then, as well.

I'll defend it if he makes it through. It's funny that people assume he has no idea what he is doing. Obviously he may be picked up and if he is then this is a terrible, terrible, move. But if he clears, then its fine. You can't assume he doesn't know the interest level in Walker and the likelihood that he will clear just because you don't.

But it may not be a risk. You have no idea what Homer knows. It may seem risky to you, but Homer may have information that says otherwise. I know that you read hockey blogs a lot, but Homer might just have better sources.

How can you not see the brilliance of this move? We potentially have 2 second round picks right now.

And I think we can all agree that that's 2 too many.

Walker will be claimed, putting 850k on our cap, we will then subsequently trade a 2nd for a suitable defenseman, and then when all our players come off LTIR and we need to get under the cap, we will trade a player + 2nd for "future considerations".

Problem solved!!!!

its ok. Holmgren knows what hes doing. and if hes claimed. its time to play multiple choice.

A. It is what it is
B. What can you do.
C. wait, we have to pay half his salary?

That's not what I am saying at all. You don't know what Homer knows. It seems risky, yes. And if he gets claimed this will be a bonehead move and I'll be on board with everyone. But if he clears, it might not be "luck." It may be that Homer knew beforehand because he is the GM and talks to other GMs. What am I saying? That is crazy! Homer couldn't possibly know something that you don't know because you called the Vokoun contract!

I have no doubt he's in the middle of objecting, so I'll adapt it for this situation.

Beef Logic: Offering a free, half-priced defenseman who we'd still be responsible for cap-wise at a time when defenseman are in demand is a bad idea

DFF Logic: It's only a bad idea if he gets claimed.

It's a bad ****ing idea from the start. The whole thing is dumb. Our only hope is that 29 other GMs decide that Walker is so terrible and useless that he isn't worth 850k, and Homer isn't going to know that for sure. If so much as 1 team decides Walker is worth having for free and at half price, we're boned.

Not sure I follow here? I think he waived Nodl specifically to get rid of him.
